I Was a Fool Lyrics
Do you remember I searched you out
How I climbed your city's walls
Do you remember me as devout
How I prayed for your calls
I stood still, it's what I did
Love like ours is never fixed
I stuck around, I did behave
I saved you every time
I was a fool for love, I was a fool for love
I was a fool, I was a fool
Then you blamed me and blocked me out
How long did you think I'd last
Then you disappeared for weeks to pout
How many times could I pack
But stand still is all I did
Love like ours is never fixed
Still I stuck around, I did behave
I saved you every time
I was a fool for love, I was a fool for love
I was a fool, I was a fool
If you're worried that I might have changed
Left behind all of my foolish ways
You best be looking for somebody else
Without a foolish heart, a foolish heart
But stand still is all we did
Love like ours is never fixed
I stuck around, I did behave
I saved you every time
I was a fool for love, I was a fool for love
I was a fool, I was a fool
How I climbed your city's walls
Do you remember me as devout
How I prayed for your calls
Love like ours is never fixed
I saved you every time
I was a fool for love, I was a fool for love
I was a fool, I was a fool
How long did you think I'd last
Then you disappeared for weeks to pout
How many times could I pack
Love like ours is never fixed
I saved you every time
I was a fool for love, I was a fool for love
I was a fool, I was a fool
Left behind all of my foolish ways
You best be looking for somebody else
Without a foolish heart, a foolish heart
Love like ours is never fixed
I saved you every time
I was a fool for love, I was a fool for love
I was a fool, I was a fool

"But stand still is all we did Love like ours is never fixed"
My first thought was that fixed = mended, but it creates an interesting contrast if you think of "fixed" to mean "permanent."
yes, this is how I came to think of it... when compared with standing still, it makes sense.

it can't be fixed, ie, mended, because both of them interpret love differently which leads to a bound disaster as what one sees as love, the other sees as the contradiction of love.

I feel this song is about, well, being a fool for love. Letting your own desires and wants for someone else get in the way of your better judgement. It's akin to 'being a punching bag' - you constantly take their hits but, just stand their.
How someome tried there best to help another, to triyng and save all the problems and waited for them to believe in them enough, they waited for something to come around, something that was diffrent, a new person...
she knows that the person was a bad person but they were trying to fix that, but they couldnt so they spent weeks waitng for them to believe in them agian just to be lost...
they felt like the belief in themsleves was currpot so they were fooling themselves that they could fix it, which is why they want that person to move on, to someone who can help them not just love them and and get hurt at the same time...
"Love like ours is never fixed" the love which made problems, soulltions, hate and care, but nothing can really make them together...
reminds me of someone... such a sad song but also such an eye opener!
Reminds me of my own break up.
(Do you remember I searched you out How I climbed your city's walls Do you remember me as devout) - Telling someone if they remember how hard you worked in trying to break down their walls/barriers. "Searched you out" as in finding you, really getting to know you for who you are behind all the walls you built.
(I stood still, it's what I did Love like ours is never fixed I stuck around, I did behave) - Putting a pause on your own life to be part of theirs. Standing in place in your own ambitions and goals and putting theirs over yours. "I did behave" meaning, I really was being good to you.
(I was a fool for love, I was a fool) - Losing your sense of self because you fall in love with someone so much you want to be everything for them. Feeling foolish and idiotic looking back on this.
(Then you blamed me and blocked me out How long did you think I'd last Then you disappeared for weeks to pout How many times could I pack) - Then this person blamed you for the relationship falling apart. "How long did you think I'd last" can depict both the person be blamed falling apart at the blame being put on them, and also translated as in "how long did you think I could keep taking this active role in your life and putting in as much energy as I am". Then this person seems to want space but after some weeks, want you back again (how many times to I have to keep packing over and over)
(If you're worried that I might have changed Left behind all of my foolish ways You best be looking for somebody else Without a foolish heart, a foolish heart) - Not being able to make the promise that you wouldn't do this again with either the same person or a different one. Feeling like if you're looking for someone not to be as stupid as me to fall so hard and put in so much energy, maybe you should look for someone else because I can't promise I won't be a fool again.
The first four line are probably my favourite on the album. I find them so clever. The song itself is also, IMO, the best on on the album. It has a nice 80s feel to it with a touch of R&B thrown in.
the word fool and foolish here should be treated here as if being in inverted commas. In order to stay consistent with the lyrics, it must be understood that the author is showing her true, unconditional love and, therefore, singing it to her partner, presenting the situation in accordance with her partner's understanding of some matters, ie, she uses her partner's interpretation of the word foolish since "she did search her out", thus, she truly understood her partner. I was a fool for love - through those lyrics she's trying to get through to her partner, ie, showing she knows her partner thinks she was a fool but she knows she's not which is why she's singing "if you're worried that i might have changed, left behind all my "foolish" ways, you d be best looking for somebody else without a "foolish" heart cause she knows her behaviour was right and she stayed truthful to herself and really loved. It's just sad her partner failed to see it although she tried to show it to her partner so many times, being patient, keep calling. But it was her partner who didnt look beyond her own hurt and got entangled in her own not understood feelings (then you blamed me and blocked me out...then you disappeared for weeks to pout). Her partner is shown in the music video with a smile of content on her face after discarding all the things they shared, it's a symbolism of retaliation which made her feel better but only for a little while. Her partner thought that getting rid of those things and stopping trying will relieve her and free from pain. But this is not happening as the problem is within her partner and not the author's.The problem stays the same, which is actually her partner's internal problems with handling emotions properly, and again, the lack of relief and feeling lost is shown at the end of a music video when she's looking out through the window and, sadly, failing to try to look within.
