Talent show Lyrics
Raise your head towards the sky
Prize every time
One excuse to hold you tight
But two roman candles in disguise
Who would recognise us?
Two explosions in the night
Can't stop what I started
And I'm never gonna forget it
I took the pill took the poison
I'm forever gonna regret it
And you need to understand
That I'm a brand new man and I
Played the cards as best I can
It could've be easy, no it could've be easy
Killer jokes with rotten lines
Prize every time
Dirty bus stop pantomime
You joined a loveless picket line
Chance of a lifetime
One excuse to hold you tight
Got a bunch of voices
Telling me to shape up
Took a pill I took the poison
And I call you if I wake up
And you need to understand
I'm a brand new man and I
Played the cards as best I can
Well it could've been easy,
oh it could've been easy
Stop what I started and I'm never gonna forget it
Took the pill took the poison
And I'm never gonna regret it
And you need to understand
I'm a brand new man and I
I played the cards as best I could
Well it could've been easy,
Oh, it could've been easy
Oh, it could've been easy
Oh, it could've been so easy
Prize every time
One excuse to hold you tight
Who would recognise us?
Two explosions in the night
And I'm never gonna forget it
I took the pill took the poison
I'm forever gonna regret it
That I'm a brand new man and I
Played the cards as best I can
It could've be easy, no it could've be easy
Prize every time
Dirty bus stop pantomime
You joined a loveless picket line
Chance of a lifetime
One excuse to hold you tight
Telling me to shape up
Took a pill I took the poison
And I call you if I wake up
I'm a brand new man and I
Played the cards as best I can
Well it could've been easy,
oh it could've been easy
Took the pill took the poison
And I'm never gonna regret it
I'm a brand new man and I
I played the cards as best I could
Well it could've been easy,
Oh, it could've been easy
Oh, it could've been easy
Oh, it could've been so easy

I think this song represents the idea of a band becoming famous and someone close to the band not being able to handle the sudden change in their fortunes and lifestyle. The singer is apologising to this loved one whether it be a girlfriend or other lover saying that he has changed with the fame and success he has gained through the band ('And you need to understand, I'm a brand new man and I played the cards the best I can' although he never intended it to be that way ('It could've been easy'). The singer feels some regret in how their relationship has changed due to his new found success hence the lyric- "Can't stop what I started And I'm never gonna forget it I took the pill took the poison I'm forever gonna regret it" and maybe the mentioning of pills is something to do with a battle with drugs or the feeling of being pressure into taking drugs, something I'm sure many musicians who become famous experience at some point. The song title- Talent Show is a reference to when Dog Is Dead first played together at their school talent show and perhaps this means the song is actually about the band itself. I absolutely love this song and think it's absolutely beautiful to listen to. Everytime I've met the band I've pestered them to play it live however they have persisted everytime I've ask them
