Cage On The Ground Lyrics
Another dreamer steps onto the stage
He sings his hope and his fear and his rage
As the applause from the crowd start to fade
He hears them swallow the key to his cage
Welcome to the machine
It's a currency generator
And then it's a guillotine
A mirror held up to your own behavior
I'm gonna take my bow
And disappear into the sound
I'm leaving my cage on the ground
When I take my bow
I'm watching it burn to the ground
See my feet flying out through the clouds
The dreamer dances inside of his cage
All his music and words are the same
But in the moment he exits the stage
You hear him whisper a prayer for the frames
Welcome to the machine
It's a currency generator
And then it's a guillotine
A mirror held up to your own behavior
I'm gonna take my bow
And disappear into the sound
I'm leaving my cage on the ground
When I take my bow
I'm watching it burn to the ground
See my feet flying out through the clouds
When they distinguish your name
It may extinguish your flame
I'm gonna take my bow
And disappear into the sound
I'm leaving my cage on the ground
When I take my bow
I want you to come to the ground
See my feet falling down from the clouds
When they distinguish your name
I'm leaving my cage on the ground
It may extinguish your flame
I'm leaving my cage on the ground
So trade those ashes for a cry
He sings his hope and his fear and his rage
As the applause from the crowd start to fade
He hears them swallow the key to his cage
It's a currency generator
And then it's a guillotine
A mirror held up to your own behavior
And disappear into the sound
I'm leaving my cage on the ground

I think this song is about how the music industry has turned into a big controlling money making machine. It controls and uses artists to make money out of generic music and then leave them behind. And Lacey is saying she is not letting the machine control her. Flyleaf is the perfect example of a band that stands up for what they believe and writes music to reach people with a message of hope.
I agree... totally about the music industry...And cuz Lacey was leaving..
"I'm gonna take my bow And disappear into the sound"
@scg10 Just listening to this album for the first time (well, third, but just started today :D) and it gave me chills when I connected this to Lacey's leaving the band just before the release of New Horizons.

Darn I wanted to be the first to say it lol. Yes I agree it's rather clear that she must be talking about the music industry. "Welcome to the machine it's a currency generator." Meaning all the music industry cares about is money. I'm surprised this song was able to be released. My favorite Flyleaf song to date.
I think that aside from being about the music industry and lacey leaving, when i listened to it it spoke to me in this way: The dreamer who steps onto the stage is a symbol for a person who pours their feelings, dreams, and passion, in hopes of finding himself and feeling peace by how others see him, but as he lets his soul explode from within him, it's rejected by the machine (the machine being social opinions or connections with people, and the currency being the acceptance, because nowadays it seems that people are looking for people with some acceptance from other people, or their peer group, which their are many of, just like their are different types of currency), once he is rejected by the machine he decides to forget about other peoples opinions on him and his work, as he steps off of the stage and just gets lost in all that he loves and finds that thats all that he needs to be set free from his cage :) its a beautiful song :)))
Yea thats a big part of it as well, looking for acceptance from a social machine which can become a cage limiting people from become who they are.

I agree with those saying it's about the music industry.
In the beginning of the song it sounds like the singer is someone who does it for the first time and then when the crowd applauds he's locked into it because he loves the applauds and the attention but then the next part it has the machine and the currency generator. So he's in love with the money. Because then it says "It's a guillotine a mirror held up to your own behavior". I think that is a comment about some of the singers who get caught up in their own success and go down a sad road like drugs.
Basically I think the song is about taking a step back and reevaluating why your doing it and how much you love singing so you don't get a big head. (I'm gonna take my bow and disappear into the sound)
Its about the music industry in whole. How they take fresh meat that shows talent, control them and make every person generic pretty much, then the "You hear him whisper a prayer for the flames" make me think of a different divine power they may use to get fame? Then "A mirror held down to your own behavior" She's telling that people are judging her on everything she says and does so she is leaving. It's actually quite a moving song. Makes you really wonder about some artists.
Cage on The Ground is about Lacey's departure from Flyleaf.
"Another dreamer steps onto the stage He sings his hope and his fear and his rage As the applause from the crowd start to fade He hears them swallow the key to his cage." = Lacey talking in third person, she is the dreamer that stepped onto the stage, (She used "He" because, man came first, Biblical reference) All these years she has been singing her hopes, fears and rage on the stage/recording etc. But after so many years, she decided to step down from the stage.
"I'm gonna take my bow And disappear into the sound I'm leaving my cage on the ground When I take my bow I'm watching it burn to the ground See my feet flying up through the clouds." = Her "bow" is all her memories she had with Flyleaf, she's leaving and when she shoots her arrow that is what she's leaving behind to all of her fans and everybody who loved her/supported her. And lastly, her feet is from the clouds is letting us know that she's still with us, you can still see her and know she's still with you, even though she's not in Flyleaf in anymore.
"So trade those ashes for a crown." = Lacey telling you to not be sad that she left.
