Solitaire Lyrics

On a dim December morning
A glass of "I forgot the name"
I can't turn wine to water
I won't come back again

And the minutes turn to hours
I keep spinning cards that look the same
And I so await the moment...
To talk to you

Please shine, oh night, my dear, embrace me

It's time again, all light is banned
My soul is free, and blessed to see

Sometimes when I'm out of reach, and sometimes when I'm there
That is when our souls agree and join in Solitaire
Sometimes when my will to love has gone away
That is when I hear your name

Now the pale sunlight is blinding
It's here to claim my sanity
And I just can't stand the waiting...
to revive ecstasy

Please shine, oh night, my dear, embrace me

It's time again, all light is banned
My soul is free, and blessed to see

Sometimes when I'm out of reach, and sometimes when I'm there
That is when our souls agree to join in Solitaire
Sometimes when my will to love has gone away
That is when I hear

I won't sustain another day
My love, my darkness
Daylight reflects my starving soul
And open wounds for everyone to see

Sometimes when I'm out of reach, and sometimes when I'm there
That is when our souls agree to join in Solitaire
Sometimes when my will to love has gone away
That is when I hear you

Sometimes when I'm out of reach, and sometimes when I'm there
That is when our souls agree to join in Solitaire
Sometimes when my will to love has gone away
That is when I hear your name

(I wanna hear your name...
hear your name)

I've had a hard time figuring out what this song could mean in connection with the story. I always thought that this song sounds like it is written from the perspective of a vampire. Like he is living in the dark and eventually cannot take it anymore, so he lets the sun burn him. Especially if you read these lines: "I won't sustain another day, my love, my darkness. Daylight reflects my starving soul and open wounds for everyone to see." Then I thought about it once again and noticed that Robert and a vampire are not as different as they might seem on first sight. Robert has spent such a long time in the dark, living with the lies he has created, that he "burns" in the light once he enters it, not literally, though. As Robert takes over the postition of his twin brother without anyone noticing it, he reaches the aimes he has been striving for since years. But once he reached them, he still is not able to be happy, because he still lives a lie.

If you look at it this way, you will also notice that this closes the circle that was begun at the beginning of the album, the song Sacrimony, which obviously portrays the protagonist's suffering in prison. Solitaire, on the other hand, portrayes Robert's suffering in freedom. In the end they both suffer, but the protagonist "sustains", because he has the hope to make up for the things he has done. Robert, on the other hand "won't sustain another day", because his suffering is senseless. Robert is even more hopelessly lost, even though his brother is the one who is jailed.

I hope this makes sense to you.

i think that this song is about the protagonists trial at court, after he finally decided to have it, cause he decided he has suffered long enough in prison. its also his and his twin brothers (hes called Robert, i think) last song to jolee, in the choruses that is. "sometimes when im out of reach and.. that is when i hear your name" and the pre solo part is from Roberts POV, as he finally realizes his sins and he apologizes to Jolee, referring to her as "my love, my darkness" and then he confesses them ("And open wounds for everyone to see").
