Geraldine Lyrics
I come from a place
where every name
and every face
seem so familiar
In came Miss progress
In her black dress
look at the mess
she is a killer
Much like you and I
in every case that's made
There has to be a traitor
It's me this time
And i'm trading fun for right
Will I regret the notion later?
Geraldine is the name that comes to mind
When I go back to reminiscing
Abilene's a woman for my childhood
I spent the evenings kissing
I'm a fool for treating her alive
And loving something cold and rocky
The homophobic gentlemen
built barricades but their efforts couldn't stop me
In came Miss progress
In her black dress
look at the mess
she is a killer
In came this progress
In her black dress
look at the mess
she is a killer
In came Miss progress
In her black dress
look at the mess
she is a killer
oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
where every name
and every face
seem so familiar
In her black dress
look at the mess
she is a killer
in every case that's made
There has to be a traitor
And i'm trading fun for right
Will I regret the notion later?
When I go back to reminiscing
Abilene's a woman for my childhood
I spent the evenings kissing
And loving something cold and rocky
The homophobic gentlemen
built barricades but their efforts couldn't stop me
In her black dress
look at the mess
she is a killer
In her black dress
look at the mess
she is a killer
In her black dress
look at the mess
she is a killer

I'm pretty sure this song is about a guy coming out as homosexual, which rocks his small, conservative town. As even positive change can bring along with it violence and controversy, people unwilling to amend their beliefs are left in the dust; hence, why Miss Progress is a killer.
I'm not sure what Geraldine's role is exactly, but I see Abeline as a figure the narrator pretended to love to belie his homosexuality, perhaps even to himself.
Interesting interpretation! I was wondering if maybe "Miss Progress" was a cross-dresser.

Or perhaps "Miss Progress" is just a liberal woman in a conservative town, making her a target for "homophobic gentlemen" (oxymoron? ha) because she isn't homophobic like others in such a conservative town. He falls in love with her, and this is a bit rebellious, because she is not the traditional girl-next-door in town - she's a progressive woman in a black dress.
