I’m not here to hold your hand
I’m just here to understand
If you’re feeling low I can help
I’m always on your side
Forever near your light
I’m always on your side
However you must fight
Within your darkest night
I’m always on your side
Lovers as lonely as lanterns lost
Show me faith’s real cost
I’m always on your side
Forever near your light
I’m always on your side
Wherever you must fight
Within your darkest night
I’m always on your side
They won’t rush you from me
‘Cause here I’ll always be
I’m always on your side
Forever near your light
I’m not here to hold you down
I’m just here to love you when

Your stars align and you let me
And your heart win
I’m always on your side
Forever near your light
I’m always on your side
Lover, teach me sweet command
Show me where I land
I’m always on your side
I’m always on your side
Forever near your light
I’m always on your side
However you must fight
Within your darkest night
I’m always on your side
With evidence of trust
And eminence of love
I’m always on your side
Capitulate and fade
Resurrect and break
I’m always on your side
Forever in your light
I’m always on your side
Lover, light the way

    General Comment

Completely agree with sevinteen that at the very least One Heart, My Love is Winter, and Violet Rays are a concept and all play off each other.

Violet Rays is the loss My Love is Winter is the despair One Heart, One Diamond is hope building out of the despair

As far as themeaning behind the title, I disagree.

I view diamond as something that has been put through the meatgrinder... as diamonds are forged in intense heat and pressure. Billy (the narrator/charcter from the past two songs) is the diamond in this scenario, given what he has been through in the previous two songs.

The heart is the person who comes to help the rough, jagged, hardened diamond love again. A lot of the imagry is about just being there as a friend (I'll be on your side), as opposed to wanting something more.

So, I agree with the idea of the concept... but I think there is a little more too the title than playing cards. (but, I could be wrong... I have a tendancy of being wrong a lot)

I haven't got to Pinwheels yet, so I'm leaving that out of the concept for right now.

    :)

    Song Meaning

If you were to put these songs into a sequence, like a concept album, (in my opinion) they would make sense. Violet Rays, he (Billy/ you/ Main character) is cheated on by his lover, and he's sad. My Love is Winter, he believes his love is gone, cold, and distant. One Diamond, One Heart, possibly making a reference to playing cards, (One, meaning Ace obviously. Ace of Diamonds, Ace of Hearts.) is giving love another chance, but letting her guide him. Light is a term thrown around in Smashing Pumpkins, meaning Love, but more importantly, knowing HOW to Love. IN MY OPINION, these 4 songs, (Violet Rays, My Love is Winter, One Diamond, One Heart, and Pinwheels.) all go in sequence, they ALL mean something, like there's possibly a concept, but just these 4 songs. I'm always on your side. <3 great song, it kind of made me smile when i first heard it. it's pretty silly, a kind of disco sound to it XD but with a serious tone to it. it's REALLY hard to listen to this song with someone who doesn't understand the Smashing Pumpkins. to them, this is a pointless, silly song, with no meaning, or chords. but if you actually understand it, this is a very beautiful song.

    My Interpretation

My Mother told me something that sure got the cogs moving in my brain. i was talking about how the title of this song didn't show up in the lyrics, but is the underlying feelings of the song. i was explaining how the title made me think of playing cards. 'One diamond, one Heart' was kinda like 'An ace of diamonds and an ace of hearts' but my mother saw it differently. she saw it as Marriage. 'One Diamond, (One ring) One Heart.' and that COMPLETELY changed my opinion of this song.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
