Since You Went Away Lyrics

Seems like to me the stars don't shine so bright,
Seems like to me the sun has lost its light,
Seems like to me there's nothing going right,
Since you went away.

Seems like to me the sky ain't half so blue,
Seems like to me that everything wants you,
Seems like to me I don't know what to do,
Since you went away.

And everything is wrong,
The day is twice as long,
And the bird's forgot his song,

Seems like to me I just can't help but sigh,
Seems like to me my throat keeps getting dry,
Seems like to me a tear stays in my eye,
Since you went away.

Since you went away.

Since You Went Away.

Cover art for Since You Went Away lyrics by Kris Delmhorst

JAMES WELDON JOHNSON ( 1871—1938) the American author, politician, diplomat, critic, journalist, poet, anthologist, educator, lawyer, songwriter, and early civil rights activist wrote the poem "Sence You Went Away". I believe that it was included in Johnson's "The Book of American Negro Poetry" published in 1922. It's been set to music and recorded by several artists including the eminent Paul Robeson sometime between 1928-1939". Seems like to me, thath Kris Delmhorst has done the best of anyone in capturing the feeling of that poem. Her phrasing, intonation and guitar work simply cannot be improved on.
