Stars Lyrics
I lit a fire with the love you left behind
It burned wild and crept up the mountainside
I followed your ashes into outer space
I can't look out the window
I can't look at this place
I can't look at the stars
They make me wonder where you are
Stars
Up on heaven's boulevard
And if I know you at all
I know you've gone too far
So I, I can't look at the stars
All those times we looked up at the sky
Looking out so far we felt like we could fly
Now I'm all alone in the dark of night
The moon is shining
But I can't see the light
And I can't look at the stars
They make me wonder where you are
Stars
Up on heaven's boulevard
And if I know you at all
I know you've gone too far
So I, I can't look at the stars
Stars
Stars
They make me wonder where you are
Stars
Up on heaven's boulevard
And if I know you at all
I know you've gone too far
So I can't look at the stars
It burned wild and crept up the mountainside
I followed your ashes into outer space
I can't look out the window
I can't look at this place
They make me wonder where you are
Stars
Up on heaven's boulevard
And if I know you at all
I know you've gone too far
So I, I can't look at the stars
Looking out so far we felt like we could fly
Now I'm all alone in the dark of night
The moon is shining
But I can't see the light
They make me wonder where you are
Stars
Up on heaven's boulevard
And if I know you at all
I know you've gone too far
So I, I can't look at the stars
Stars
They make me wonder where you are
Stars
Up on heaven's boulevard
And if I know you at all
I know you've gone too far
So I can't look at the stars

Grace, on a recent VH1 Storytellers, tells the meaning behind this song. She said it started as a song she was just writing about loss, but halfway through it she realized she was writing about a friend of hers. Her touching description was that her friend was out of control and compared it to a balloon you would lose as a kid, where you try to go up on a step, or a ladder to try and catch it before it was lost. That's where the lyric "if I know you at all, I know you've gone too far" comes from.
This to me is about loss and taking that loss very hard, to the point where one can't "look at the stars" because it's too painful.
This song is beautiful and simple, and Grace playing it on the piano is so beautiful!
Absolutely gorgeous song. Shows that young artists can write and sing beautiful songs. To me, the song is about remembering a loved one, who is lost to death, Alzheimer's, alcohol, drug, or otherwise.
This is such an amazing song! Nowhere near as acclaimed as it should be.
These lyrics resonated with me after loosing my person to suicide. The words “if I know you at all, I know you’ve gone too far” is what I’ve called out to him many times. Why did you go that far! It is hard to look around here, to look up. To be in this place alone. That is my version of meaning for this Grace Potter song.
