Mile Zero Lyrics

It starts as one festering feeling
The kind that cuts from down to the soul
No way to make amends for the time behind the door
Street lights feed lies straight to the mind of the wishful wanderer
How could he give up?
No second chances to say goodbye

Wrapped in this cold, nostalgic energy
From cries of the ones who are buried
Ascend beyond

Life is ruthless and shot full of pain
It lifts you up, leaves you out in the rain
And it hurts just to know that you're not coming back again
I will miss you, my friend
Memories like a slug to the brain
Paint the walls with a love that will stain the darkest of nights
You left to join with the stars and I cannot shake this off my chest

In death we grieve until all have transcended from this realm
In time we will meet again

Suddenly I can feel the connection between dimension ties
Open gut on the floor
Trembling down to the core
What is this?

It's been a long ride without you
I'm lost inside my own world
There's not a single day where I've feigned the acceptance
But it's a somber stroll down this road that we call life

The silence still is crawling out of my sedated sight
How can I be free?

Wrapped in this cold nostalgic energy
From cries of the ones who are buried
Ascend beyond

Life is ruthless and shot full of pain
It lifts you up, leaves you out in the rain
And it hurts just to know that you're not coming back again
I will miss you, my friend
Memories like a slug to the brain
Paint the walls with a love that will stain the darkest of nights
Left to journey alone
But I can find my way back home

RIP Shawn Bennet

I will start by saying I can tell this is a very personal song for Spencer, so I'll try to tread lightly as I interpret his lyrics.

In Periphery's lyric sheet that comes with the album's booklet, "RIP Shawn Bennet" is printed at the end of the lyrics to this song (as it is here). In Periphery's "Album Thanks" section of the booklet, Spencer says, "Shawn Bennet, I miss you dearly and would not be here right now had it not been for you." Upon googling the name, I came across Spencer's FormSpring on which someone asked him to elaborate on who Shawn Bennet was, to which Spencer replied, "I would rather not. that's a personal part of my life that I only talk with close friends about."

Now, investigations aside, I will proceed with my personal interpretation of the song in somewhat of a line-by-line analysis...

"No way to make amends for the time behind the door" - hiding something/keeping to himself?

"How could he give up?" - did he "give up" on his life and take it himself?

I feel the chorus is relatively self-explanatory, however I did notice a recurring theme with "shot" and "slug" pointing to firearms, but I'll leave that alone.

"You left to join with the stars and I cannot shake this off my chest" - does he feel in some way responsible?

"Open gut on the floor" - Literally?

"Left to journey alone But I can find my way back home" - Though hard, he will make it on his own

As a side note, this is one of my favorite songs off the album because of the emotion that's packed into it, and it has given me new respect for Sponce, both as a musician and as a person. Makes me "love that $#!†" even more...

My Interpretation

Oh, and I forgot to add, but at the very end of the song, it sounds to me like a pill bottle is being dropped and hitting the ground. Open to interpretation..

Spencer said on his form spring that his friend, Shawn, died in 2005. without elaborating more about his fallen friend, he wanted to pay tribute to not only him but to everyone else in his life who had passed on.

The crack at the end of the song is Spencer smashing his headphones to the ground.

All i know is this song hits really close to home with me. My father passed away on jan 21st 2016, and we had been going through some tough times. To make a long story short, my parents were battling through a possible divorce, and this made my dad depressed and he basically drank himself to death... the reason this hits close to home is because i wish there was so much more i wouldve said or done to him to fix this situation, i just didnt know what to do. This song came on pandora not long after he passed away and the emotion in it gets to me every time. Every time i think about my dad and how much i miss him i listen to this song... thank you for making this song Spencer, i am sorry for your loss and i feel your pain in this song.

As stated before by others, this song was made in dedication to Shawn Bennet after his passing away. Spencer being obviously close with him, he dedicated this song to him.

(just adding, this song is by far my favorite in the album and truly has deep meaning. Im not just saying that, I've loved it since I heard it and I sympathize with you Spencer for the loss of you're friend)

He didn't want to publicly reveal the situation and pardon me Spencer or friends or family of Shawn Bennet. I did some digging around and found what I believe to be a match. Avoiding any details, Shawn passed away by drowning due to a sudden asthma attack while body boarding.

Thats as much as I'll say, I'm sorry if I overstepped any boundaries by posting this. I truly am sorry for you're loss Spencer, friends, and Family of Shawn.

And yes, that sound was Spencer throwing his mic on the ground after recording I believe

Keep in mind also. None of this is confirmed. There's no way of telling if this is the correct information. I just assumed due to the similarities of the cases I found and from the information already given.
