Clone Lyrics

Call me out
My regret
Only makes me
Stronger yet

Nothing I've ever done right
Happened on the safe side
It's the other way
I'm missing everyone I know now

It's too late in the day,
Too late in the day to take you on all the rides
I was afraid to tell you that

Back to that
Photograph
Can you clone me?
I look like everyone you know now

It's too late in the day,
Too late in the day to turn it around or change my mind
It's too late in the day to take you on all the rides
It's too late in the day to tell me I'm off the path
We're already in the aftermath

Call me out
My regret
Only makes me
Stronger yet

It's too late in the day,
Too late in the day to turn it around or change my mind
It's too late in the day to take you on all the rides
It's too late in the day to tell me I'm off the path
We're already in the aftermath

I get the impression that Emily is singing about having a child as a celebrity in the public eye. She has stated on several occasions that Synthetica represents a very fake version of her and the Hollywood lifestyle. She is getting older, and wrestling with the idea of giving up her career and fame to make a clone of herself. She is also questioning her ability to raise a child in that environment; having the time to raise a happy clone, offering it the world and not disappointing the child. Celebrity babies like Suri, Maddox, Apple and Ivy Blue come to mind, and how they are thrust into the spotlight from birth, being raised by nannies when their actual parents don't have the time.

Emily's getting old but she's not done yet.

"Call me out; my regret only makes me stronger yet." Yeah, sure, tell her about her mistakes. She can't go back and fix them but remembering them will steel her.

"Nothing I've ever done right happened on the safe side." She took chances.

It's too late in the day, Too late in the day to turn it around or change my mind << She can't go back. It's too late in the day to take you on all the rides << You've decided to join this party a little too late, sorry. It's too late in the day to tell me I'm off the path << Her course is set. We're already in the aftermath << That story is over.

It's no use trying to fix the past. You just have to go forward through the aftermath, out the other side, into something new.

Would you just please shut up. You are a man of all talk and no action but easy, predictable, boring, year-after-year plastic action. What legacy will you leave your son? And when did you decide that having your father's fate was ok? Was he a coward, too, that masked his lack of action by proclaiming being a non-conformist. Yup, booze and sex are surely accomplishments of which to be proud. Woot. Woot. You are weak and scared and filled with shame. And you champion it like it's a damn blue ribbon given out at a country fair. Congrats to you....

Oh. That's what I think the song is addressing :D

I think you got that just about spot on. This song really works for me because it balances humility in learning from the past, with the courage to stay true to yourself. Perfect advice for anyone looking to grow.

"It’s too late in the day to take you on all the rides" this is a metaphor for the disappointment you feel when you cant go on all the rides at an amusement park; the rides represent the hope her loved ones have for her in turning her life around, and coming back to the person she used to be. Yet she's saying its too late for that. She cannot be who she was before. "I was afraid to tell you that" she didnt want to tell her family upfront that their hopes were of no use, and that it was too late.

"Back to that photograph, can you clone me?" The photo represents her old self, the one that those that are close to her want her to be again. Since she cant be that person again, a clone of her old self could fix the problem. "I look like everyone you know now" could hint at what her 'wrong' decision was: she's become like everyone else, generic

"It’s too late in the day to tell me I’m off the path. We’re already in the aftermath". Telling her she made the wrong choice(s) and that she's not on the path thats expected of her to be on (like a more 'righteous' path or 'logical' path) won't make a difference, since its too late for that, the consequences of her decision are already being dealt with.

She feels overall regretful for causing troubles because of her decisions, but what's done is done. I think also, the title of the song, "clone" puts an extra emphasis on the fact that she is not a clone. She is not her old self anymore--she's grown--and she is also not society's clone that complies to normal expectations. She follows her own gut, even if the results arent so great and even if she lets people down, she is her own self.

She's done bad things, but she did what she had to do. Problem is her perfect image (the one on the photograph) is gone, she's tainted now, like everyone you know. Pointing that out isn't gonna help, it's too late, and although she regrets it, she knows it was necessary (otherwise she wouldn't be here --the aftermath-- now).

My Interpretation

I think this song is about letting someone down or disappointing them by changing, or making a decision(s) that, to the other person, wasn't right. But to her, it made her "stronger yet".

Emily takes on the voice of a person who made a choice that she regrets yet she made this choice because, maybe she needed to, or she felt it was right.

Like @screamingly said, she takes risks on many of her decisions that turned out to be good. "Nothing I’ve ever done right happened on the safe side" However, not all of these risks turn out in her favour, and this particular decision(s) in this song had a bad outcome in her family's eyes."It’s the other way, I’m missing everyone I know now". It seems she's become disconnected/distanced from her family
