Only the Broken Hearts (Make You Beautiful) Lyrics
So life, your gilded leafs have turned
From "once upon a time" to "darkest hour"
Ember to inferno- the ending is stronger
I burned myself for a page of rhymes
Only the broken hearts make you beautiful
And one has got to be mine
Only a broken heart, turned cynical
Lights my final rhyme
Someone broke the frame and now my picture's gone
Remember what I look like?
You can keep my old umbrella
I'll have my rainy day, thank you for all the pain
That's all I wanted...
Only the broken hearts make you beautiful
And one has got to be mine
Only a broken heart, turned cynical
Love lost, a typical rhyme
From "once upon a time" to "darkest hour"
Ember to inferno- the ending is stronger
I burned myself for a page of rhymes
And one has got to be mine
Only a broken heart, turned cynical
Lights my final rhyme
Remember what I look like?
You can keep my old umbrella
I'll have my rainy day, thank you for all the pain
And one has got to be mine
Only a broken heart, turned cynical
Love lost, a typical rhyme

Everybody hurts.
Lost love? What...is s/he working late at Dairy Queen tonight or something? Don't worry. I'm sure you can supply her underaged body with alcohol and then have lots of sex to AC/DC anda Kings Of Leon. Just make sure you introduce her to ALL of you. Let's see how that works for you. Rot in HELL.
What the fuck is this supposed to mean...?

Easy to understand. Basically it's a song about a man who loved a girl who broke his heart; this made him suffer so much at the beginning. We can understand that this girl must have broke many hearts, and the narrator explains that this experience made him cynical. Maybe he renounced to believe in true love or something like that. The fact that "only the broken hearts make you beautiful" might be a common conception that some girls are pretty famous just because they had a lot of men. It could be even more cynical and negative: a girl who had a lot of men is called "beautiful" by other men because basically she's kind of a whore.
I actually view this song as a satire of the idea that for something to be "art", it needs to be really dark or tragic. The narrator repeatedly mentioning his "rhymes" makes me suspect that he's some kind of writer who holds this belief. Because he believes that true art can only come from misery, he deliberately makes himself as miserable as possible. In the end, despite how much pain he's put himself through, he's grateful for it and believes that it made him a better artist.
I think it's about what Tony has stated ever so often: he can only write songs about tragedies, sad situations etc. So the broken hearts are, in a way, the thing which makes it all 'beautiful'. It's quite obvious in the line 'I burned myself for a page of rhymes': creating all these stories might be a little bit 'burning'
