We Can't Be Beat Lyrics
I was the Duke of Earl
The Duke of Earl
But it couldn't last
I was the Pony Express
But I ran out of gas
Oh golden dreams
Golden dreams, all lose their glow
I don't need perfection, I love the whole
Oh give me a life, that needs correction
Nobody loves, loves perfection
Loneliness, loneliness will run you through
All the kids are laughing, I'm laughing too
If you want my eyes, take my eyes, they're always true
If you want my heart, take my heart, it's right here for you
Its been so long, been so long, but I made it through
Its been so long, been so long, but I made it through
Its been so long
We'll never leave
We can't be beat
We can't be beat
We'll never leave
We can't be beat
The world is ours
We can't be beat
We can't be beat
The Duke of Earl
But it couldn't last
I was the Pony Express
But I ran out of gas
Oh golden dreams
Golden dreams, all lose their glow
I don't need perfection, I love the whole
Oh give me a life, that needs correction
Nobody loves, loves perfection
Loneliness, loneliness will run you through
All the kids are laughing, I'm laughing too
If you want my heart, take my heart, it's right here for you
Its been so long, been so long, but I made it through
Its been so long, been so long, but I made it through
Its been so long
We can't be beat
We can't be beat
We'll never leave
We can't be beat
The world is ours
We can't be beat
We can't be beat

So...We Can't Be Beat. A well titled song with a catchy tune and a reality more true than even the lyrics can describe. The Walkmen always seem to put together a catchy tune with the right amount of lyrics. I feel as though the lyrics are rather self-explanitory but its worth adding a few words in here to say, yep, you can't be beat... at least not with a song like this. Can't wait for the full release of Heaven and what it offers as full compilation.
I guess i have to add. I have to believe this a serenade for a great love, the type we all dream about, where nothing else matters but the trust and partnership of that love.
I think this song is about changing your perception of the world, and your standards, as you get older.
The narrator is clearly dismissing "perfection" and "golden dreams" (like being the Duke of Earl or the Pony Express) as unreasonable and unobtainable. Youthful wishes. Trying to achieve things you can't will only leave you lonely and unhappy. It seems to take the narrator "so long" to finally learn that the more important things in life are truth and love and that's when the song breaks into its upbeat outro.
The narrator can't be beat at this point, because he isn't trying to obtain anything that he doesn't already have. He's happy and content. The reason he can't be beat isn't because he's invincible. It's because he isn't competing anymore.
Completely minor Lyric correction. In the part where he signs "Nobody loves, loves perfection" I think it should actually be "Nobody loves love's perfection". While only being a minimal grammar correction gives that line a completely new meaning. Over all yet another great fucking song.
Golden dreams, all lose their glow I don't need perfection, I love the whole
