Hypocrates Lyrics

You're the lonely one and only body in the world
Who can make me, who can break me down into a young girl

You say that love is not that easy
And that's the lesson that you teach me
So hypocritical, overly cynical
I'm sick and tired of all your preaching

Who are you to tell me, tell me
Who to, to be, to be?

You're my last bone of contention
That could break at any mention
You're the last wall that will stand tall
‘Til the end of the world

I know you only want to own me
And that's the kind of love you show me
You tell me one thing and do another
Keep all your secrets undercover

Who are you to tell me, tell me
Who to, to be, to be?
Yeah, you let, you let go
Yeah, you let, you let go
Yeah, you let, you let go of me

Yeah you played the martyr for so long
That you can't do anything wrong

Who are you to tell me, tell me
Who to, to be, to be?
Yeah, you let, you let go
Yeah, you let, you let go
Yeah, you let, you let go of me

Who are you to tell me, tell me
Who to, to be, to be?

When I had first heard Hypocrates, I was in my room, listening to a Playlist for Marina and The Diamonds I'd come up with the day before, I still hadn't heard every song. That night was my last night in my verbally, and emotionally abusive Biological Father's house and I was packing to move out,the next day, my mother was coming up to where I was living to see me graduate with my Dad and younger brothers. I'd had a beautiful day too, one of my straight best friends had said some things about me[specifically his approval of the 'badassness' of me wearing my heels ALL DAY] that just made me feel good because he's one of the only people who really gets it. It was just past midnight, and I was reflecting as Hypocrates came up on my playlist. I don't really remember the details, but upon the beginning of the first chorus I collapsed onto the stuff I was packing away in huge heaving sobs. I just felt like I was being freed from heavy chains, like I was about to step off a tall mountaintop and fly. I was sad for what I was losing, but happy for everything I was gaining.

To me this song represents the freedom from my father, who didn't appreciate me and was always trying to change me. Freedom from abuse, Freedom from the lies and hypocrisy. Marina you've personified the essence of what it feels like to be free from someone who abuses you and tries to hold you down.

My Interpretation

@BoyPrincess32 I could not agree with you more about this song. I have always felt the same way, freedom from abuse. For me it was freedom from my emotionally and verbally abusive mother. Literally every word fits so perfectly. Listening to and singing along to this song is very cathartic for me for that reason.

You should change "hypocrates" to "Hypocrates".

I like the lyrics, but I just don't understand why it's called Hypocrates. Can anybody help me out here?

It could be a pun on the word hypocrite.

I believe it's a play on words mixing Hypocrite with the ending -crates, like the greek philosophers of old Socrates, Hippocrates,

@EpicAmazingExplosion I always kinda assumed it was related to Hippocratic Oath (doctor's oath to 'do no harm').

And that this song is about an relationship where one is controlling ("I know you only want to own me and that's the kind of love you show me") the other through 'self-sacrifice' ("Yeah you played the martyr for so long That you can't do anything wrong").

Ok so, this is going to be quite short cuz I don't have much time, but I think Marina was abused by her father, at least verbally. I think with "guilty", this song, "daddy was a sailor" and "plastic rainbow" (I think there's another one but I can't remember (again, I will elaborate once I get the time) ), I think Marina is trying to say that she always wanted to be a Daddy's Girl, but her father was never satisfied with her. Also, that her father and adults surrounding her have always told her what to be.
