| Marina and the Diamonds – Hypocrates Lyrics

When I had first heard Hypocrates, I was in my room, listening to a Playlist for Marina and The Diamonds I'd come up with the day before, I still hadn't heard every song. That night was my last night in my verbally, and emotionally abusive Biological Father's house and I was packing to move out,the next day, my mother was coming up to where I was living to see me graduate with my Dad and younger brothers. I'd had a beautiful day too, one of my straight best friends had said some things about me[specifically his approval of the 'badassness' of me wearing my heels ALL DAY] that just made me feel good because he's one of the only people who really gets it. It was just past midnight, and I was reflecting as Hypocrates came up on my playlist. I don't really remember the details, but upon the beginning of the first chorus I collapsed onto the stuff I was packing away in huge heaving sobs. I just felt like I was being freed from heavy chains, like I was about to step off a tall mountaintop and fly. I was sad for what I was losing, but happy for everything I was gaining.
To me this song represents the freedom from my father, who didn't appreciate me and was always trying to change me. Freedom from abuse, Freedom from the lies and hypocrisy. Marina you've personified the essence of what it feels like to be free from someone who abuses you and tries to hold you down. |

I think it's about a girl with big dreams, who keeps getting criticized and called selfish by her friends and the people around her, who think she's too much of a Prima Donna, but she really just wants to live a life of glamour that transcends her everyday normalcy. She also probably fills her days dreaming and every day she goes without her dreams coming true feel like a chore and are hard to get through
but she's determined to work hard to get her dreams to come true. |

This song reminds me of a person about to commit suicide, feeling overwhelmed by their pain, they're not giving up on life the pain is just too much to bear, they're falling into the deep sleep of death, and they're finding peace. On another more metaphorical end, I think it's about changing who you are to get through an obstacle that's overwhelming, and how we get stronger through pain and being hurt. When you're overwhelmed and you just want freedom from the burdens. |

I feel like this is a link to being on someone's arm, like when you're walking with a date and the guy's arm is linked with the girl's her hand is usually holding on to bearm she wants to be on his arm again, and be an item with him in public but she knows they've drifted too far. |

I just want to add to our interpretation of the second to last stanza, it's kind of like she's demeaning herself ' but as you see I do not have an awful lot to tell' she's kind of saying she isn't as important as him and she knows it, she doesn't have an interesting story to tell or the media attention he has. |

This song emotionally moves me, and brings me to the brink of tears. It reminds me of my deep personal struggle and how hard it is to move on from the pain of the past, but in the end through all the darkness you find new light. the only lyric I hear differently is instead of ' found a devil in me' I hear ' from the devil in me' like you're looking for Heaven from a state of hell or pain. |
