Rabbit Hole Lyrics
I don’t wanna be the only one ’round here
Everything I’m saying’s falling on deaf ears
Come to get you if you make another sound
Make you an example since you call it home
Anyone who listens is gonna get theirs when the water floods down
Into the rabbit hole
Hands up if you think you’re gonna save us now
Before we shoot the messenger for talking too loud
We’ll keep you on the run
We get what we want
Every which way you go they’re gonna hunt you down
Making you believe a lot of sticks and bricks can get you stoned
Cause anyone who listens is gonna get theirs when the water floods down
Into the rabbit hole
You think we gonna run
You think we gonna run, you're wrong
Just feeding the flame
Arresting the fight
And it’s a cold day in hell
It’ll be a cold day in hell
Growing up
Just feeding the flame
Arresting the fight
With fire, with fire
In the rabbit hole
Everything I’m saying’s falling on deaf ears
Come to get you if you make another sound
Make you an example since you call it home
Anyone who listens is gonna get theirs when the water floods down
Into the rabbit hole
Before we shoot the messenger for talking too loud
We’ll keep you on the run
We get what we want
Making you believe a lot of sticks and bricks can get you stoned
Cause anyone who listens is gonna get theirs when the water floods down
Into the rabbit hole
You think we gonna run, you're wrong
Just feeding the flame
Arresting the fight
And it’s a cold day in hell
It’ll be a cold day in hell
Growing up
Just feeding the flame
Arresting the fight
With fire, with fire
In the rabbit hole

A really good interpretation TomParker ^
I agree it's about the myriad evils being played out across our world right now. Few can clearly perceive Truth through the hazy filter of deception, outright lies and distractions created by the Powers That Be (politicans, big business, media) and their allied forces of mischief (pop culture that breeds low self esteem and a life of shallow consumerism... and acts of violence, oppression, discrimination and intolerance against others.)
This song is one of defiance against a corrupt system. The narrator is saying that even if others cannot see the truth of the world, or won't admit it ("I don't want to be the only one around here") HE knows right from wrong and will stand up for what is right till the very end. But at the same time, he warns that these forces of evil are not to be messed with... they will attempt to repress our freedom of speech, and will hunt down those who rebel against them.
The lyrics convey a rather disturbing, bleak world view - albeit, probably an accurate one - describing the lengths some people/groups will go to achieve and maintain their positions of power. But in my opinion it also conveys a sense of the narrator's strength, in that he refuses to be silenced and will not take this oppression and ill-treatment lying down, but will speak out against corruption - even if it means giving his life in the process.
I don't wanna be the only one around here But everything I'm saying's falling on deaf ears They'll come to get you If you make another sound Make you an example Send you crawling home
Anyone who listens gonna get theirs When the water floods down Into the rabbit hole
Hands up if you think you're gonna save us now Before we shoot the messenger for talking too loud We'll keep you on the run Til we get what we want
Every which way you go We're gonna hunt you down making a believer out of sticks and bricks Can get you stoned Cause anyone who listens gonna get theirs When the water floods down Into the rabbit hole
And if you think we're gonna run If you think we're gonna run, you're wrong You're just feeding the flame Arresting the fire
And it's a cold day in hell It'll be a cold day in hell Before we're done You're just feeding the flame Arresting the fire in Fire in Fire in Inside the rabbit hole
I think this song is about raising awareness about oppression within society. The singer is expressing his unpopular view about how unfair and unjust the world is, but his class conciousness is a threat to those above him and therefore his words are surpressed and, consequently, 'falling on deaf ears' (Nobody is hearing him).
The lines 'Come to get you if you make another sound, Make you an example since you’re crawling home', express, in the perspective of those in power, how they fight those who challenge their authority in order to protect their position in society.
In my opinion, 'To the rabbit hole' symbolises a world masked by a fog of confusion by the capitalist classes. The only place we can retreat to in the end is to the world in which we are made to think we are treated fairl because we have no choice..yet.
After the main drop in the song (following the second 'To the rabbit hole')the song twists back into a retaliation. The lyrics 'You think we're gonna run, if you think we're gonna run you're wrong' express his anger perfectly against those who have unfair power in the world. Repetition of the word 'flame' and 'feeding the flame' suggest that those above us are fighting the inevitable, and that one day, people will experience class consciousness and overthrow what power the oppressors in the world have.
The lyrics from the song 'London's Burning' support this theme, with the lyric 'heavy is the hand pressing down again' (the hand being those who maintain power unjustly).
These lyrics tie closely with the views of Karl Marx in my opinion, with the view that the perfect society should be classless.
Thanks Lanta, I think we've nailed the meaning of this song.
