Demiurge Lyrics

Writing and embraced
Retribution. Soul eclipse turns solid
Energized. Sucking vomit acting like its honey
Deprived of I
Falling while thrusting squares through circles
Serving one single new dimension

Terror rising. Agnostics' nemesis. A prophet of extinction

I scorch the skies before your very eyes
My deliverance: enslavement labelled "love"

Just trust this nemesis to sign and seal extinction

The Demiurge is the creator of the universe. I tend to imagine it as the Christian god but they could mean it as any Creator in general. For the purpose of this post, I'll assume that it refers to the Christian god.

"Writhing and embraced:" You writhe in a constant struggle of anguish, guilt, and misery caused by your religion, and yet you are under the delusion that this religion and its respective God loves and accepts (embraces) you.

"Sucking vomit acting like it's honey:" You engage in all the activities associated with the religious doctrine - you go to church, read the Bible, pray... but in truth it is all worthless garbage, or "vomit." Despite this, you still believe it all to be the word of God and as such, you consume these lies as if they were the words of true wisdom (honey).

"Deprived of I:" This religion deprives you of your autonomy and indoctrinates you into a collective hive mind of unthinking slaves.

"Falling while thrusting squares through circles:" Unknowingly falling into the pit of lies created by your religion, you continue to try and fix the world's problems using what your religion teaches you, to no avail (squares through circles = giving the wrong answers). This may also be a reference to children's toys and the fact that Christians are naive like children, not realizing their mistake. In the same vein, children are indoctrinated from a young age, so that religion is all they know, and they are not given a choice of what to believe. As long as they follow the beliefs they are taught as Christians, they will always be children. The Christian serves one single new dimension: lies.

"Agnostics' nemesis. A prophet of extinction:" Your god is the nemesis of all nonbelievers, but in actuality your belief drives you and the rest of the human race to extinction due to closed-mindedness and apathy towards the environment. You continue to destroy the world under the delusion that God will save it.

"I scorch the skies...:" This line and the one following it are from the first-person perspective of God. In an act of incredible power he can annihilate all that we know, if he so pleases. (This could also be a reference to pollution and the greenhouse effect.) You are enslaved to your religion but, as before, you trick yourself into believing that you love your God, even though you live in constant, crippling fear of him.

"Just trust this nemesis to sign and seal extinction:" A message to the theist. You can trust that God (the agnostics' nemesis) will continue to lie, and your religious doctrine will deceive you so that you lead the world to its ultimate extinction (pollution, religious wars, etc.). Trust in religion will slowly kill the world.

My Interpretation

A Demiurge is a being responsible for the creation of the universe. So I'd say yeah it got a religious touch to it. Gnosticism describes a collection of ancient religions whose followers shunned the material world created by the demiurge and embraced the spiritual world. And Agnosticism is the view that the truth values of certain claims, especially claims about the existence or non-existence of God, as well as other religious and metaphysical claims that are unknown or unknowable. So I think the line "Agnostics nemesis; A prophet of extinction" could have something to do with the devil? Also the line "Falling while thrusting squares through circles Serving one single new dimension" I think has something to do with the devil as he fell from heaven and then created chaos and served in Hell. To sum it up. In my eyes it's saying to all the small minded people "What if it isn't bullshit? How will you feel then?" Which makes the line "I scorch the skies before your very eyes" so damn cool. You always hear these small minded people saying "seeing is believing" so to see the skies "scorch before their very eyes" would just be terrifying to them because they could never wrap their heads around the idea of a God or a Devil. I could be completely wrong but that's what i think the song is about, the lyrics are written so well. FYI I'm not religious.

@brodiemcc Yes, youre right. But this lyric is more profound than you think. You should read philosopher Plato, I mean his dialogue Timaeus. In this dialogue Demiurge is explained. He is creator of the Universe. He create material world modeled on idealism. Material reality is just copy of Idea. That Idea exist out of this world and reality. I think this song from Meshuggah is indicator that show us we are just Human beings and dualism is something what we cant understand, just feel. This is criticism of religion and those who destroy our rationality through the system of mechanical...

I believe this song is about Lucifer, about how he fell from the heaven to establish his own kingdom and became the Demiurge who created the material world and trapped souls from heaven inside matter. To me this seems to be most logical/probable interpretation since it perfectly matches the whole theme of the album

I'm thinking this could be about people tangling themselves in religion and being close-minded. I really wish more people can have more interpretations here. This song looks so flexible with meanings.

For some reason I think this song is about having a child!

"Writhing and embraced" and "serving one single new dimension" I interpret as giving into bestial urges to reproduce. This urge is very strong in all animals, people included, and can be all consuming.

"Terror rising. Agnostics nemesis. A prophet of extinction" to me sounds like the pregnancy/gestation. The fear of upcoming responsibility and being given something to worship in the future?

"My deliverance - enslavement labelled: love" - The realisation at the moment of birth that you are now a parent, and responsible for this newborn child that you love. This love is so strong that it enslaves you.

"Just trust this nemesis to sign and seal extinction " - I get the feeling the new baby/love is the nemesis to the selfish self serving self, and as such puts an end to it.

My Interpretation

The demiurge, the corrupted malevolent force that tricked us into thinking it was god, feeding on our hate and anger, our anxiety and fear. It wants you to think less of others, more of your self, it wants you to be apart from the world rather than part of it. It wants you to think you're alone and it needs you to want false hope or "faith". Tell anyone that blindly believes in "God" that they're part of the problem and Meshuggah are the fucking solution.

@da11021553 This! Someone gets it!
