Valentine Lyrics

You didn't see my valentine
I sent it via pantomime
While you were watchin' someone else
I stared at you and cut myself

Its all I'll do 'cause I'm not free
A fugitive too dull too flee
I'm amorous but out of reach
A still-life drawing of a peach

I'm a tulip in a cup
I stand no chance of growing up
I've made my peace i'm dead I'm done
I watch you live to have my fun

I root for you, I love you x2

I made it to a dinner date
My teardrops seasoned every plate
I tried to dance but lost my nerve
I cramped up in the learning curve

I'm a tulip in a cup
I stand no chance of growing up
I'm resigned to sail on through
In the wake of tales of you

I root for you, I love you x4

Unrequited love. That's what i think this song is about.

I agree, JackSylverwind, plus maybe some social anxiety mixed in. Upbeat tempo, but kind of sad in a way. One of my favourites off the new album, though, to be sure.

It's clear she likes him. She didn't exactly tell him but she showed him. Which is what she means by "pantomime". But he was interested in someone else, and she knew but she still continued her affections. "A fugitive too dull too flee" She's going to sit back and watch him love someone else. "I've made my peace i'm dead i'm done, I watched you live to have my fun, I root for you, i love you" And so she tells herself because she loves him she will encourage his love for another which is what she means by "I root for you, I love you".

Song Meaning

A tulip signifies a perfect love.

You plant your roots with a person for a relationship to grow. “I stared at you and cut myself” may represent that she cut herself from the garden that may have been them, as she is now merely a flower in a cup of water – rootless, alone, and will eventually wilt.

My Interpretation

@PixyStrdust, you don't have to dig that deep to understand. I'd bet at the moment she wrote it she was thinking "I'm bleeding for you and you're looking at her." Pretty simple explanation of unrequited love.

@stinajayon Guess that's why I posted it as my interpretation, amirite?

To me, it's a song about someone who loves a guy, even though he doesn't feel the same, she still tries anyway. She knows he loves someone else but still proceeds to show affection towards him, even if there is no chance of her love being requited.

"While you were watchin' someone else I stared at you and cut myself" She knows he is interested in another person, and this hurts her deeply but she still wants him. He doesn't seem to really notice her and instead pays attention to the one he actually wants.

"Its all I'll do 'cause I'm not free A fugitive too dull too flee" She is trapped in these feelings for him, like a prisoner. She can't get over him or escape.

"I stand no chance of growing up I've made my peace i'm dead I'm done I watch you live to have my fun

I root for you, I love you x2"

There is seemingly no possibility of her leaving him. She is supportive of him and believes in him because of the love she feels.

The girl singing the song clearly cares deeply for a guy who will never see her in the same light. She is aware of this, however, stays by him because she wants to support him and just seeing him makes her happy. Even if he wants another, and this hurts her, this feeling of disappointment and heartache is overpowered by her love for him, so she will never get over him. Just what I think it could all mean

My Interpretation

There is a ton of plant metaphors/symbols. Being a tulip in a cup, she is a flower blooming for the one she loves, but is confined in the small space (just like a cup) of her love for them. She can't seem to move on and free herself--she is too deeply attached to this person and is too used to wanting their affections. It's why she can't "grow up"--because her love for that person is what keeps her in a cup much too small for her to thrive. "I root for you" could be taken as cheering someone on from the sidelines, but "root" could also mean plant roots! Like she is still growing only because of the one she loves. They are her only life's purpose. Also!! might be a stretch, but "still life drawing of a peach" might refer to the Ancient Roman painting "still life with peaches and water jar," which is a fresco depicting 5 unripe peaches. It's like she wants to "ripen" and move on or confront her emotions in some way (maybe by making her feelings known), but cannot--she is a still life--stagnant and unable to move, like a deer in the headlights of her desire.

I think it's about a girl who has been in love with someone for a long time, but that person doesn't notice it. She can't tell them because she's too afraid to and doesn't think they feel the same ("pantomime" because she is trying to show them she loves them, but is too shy to do it forwardly). So she traps herself in her love, loving them from a distance, endlessly. She's loved this person for such a long time she does not know how to unlove them (I stand no chance of growing up) and feels stuck as a tiny thing that can't move on.

My Interpretation

Unrequited love seems the obvious answer, I guess. I think she may have also been talking about actually getting somewhat romantically involved with the person in question, but fucking it up. Hits home pretty hard!

For me, this song is all about the sadness that follows unrequited love, as some of the others were saying. This song's lyrics sounds exactly like my high school experiences with having crushes. I would literally lay in my bed for days depressed over a guy not liking me back. I would also like to note that she sings the word 'you' six times during each chorus. This could represent not only the protagonist's love for her subject that goes unrecognized in the favour of another girl, but it could represent her failing each one of her classes (six) as a result of the sadness of just knowing it's someone else he loves instead of her.

My Interpretation

Good summary -- from where do you get the 6 classes inference?

She sings "you" 6 times.

@blownawish, the song is obviously about unrequited love so why dig deeper? I think you're placing your own circumstance into the words of the song. She's quite an adult not so I doubt she'd be thinking of missed classes in relation to her love-life. The "You" part works rhythmically and it doesn't have to be more complicated than that.

My Opinion

I would also like to note that she sings the word 'you' six times during each chorus.

my personal interpretation is that she is referring to "others". to her fans. to her friends. to the world. you you you you. she is referring to the listener(s). she is rooting for you. she is rooting for me. you you you you you you. each of those is a different person, not the same person.
