Falling Free

One of her hardest Madonna songs to grasp imo. I think it's basically about leaving the earth as an old soul. She found her home and after all the work and emotions she's gone through on the Earth, she's finally ready to go, finally at peace. I don't think it's sad.

I would agree that this song is SAD and deals with FORCES BEYOND OUR CONTROL, but i would definitely disagree with the comment that it is HOPELESS.

This song deals with the narrator's response to the FUSION OF TWO HEARTS: Her response is to see this as a liberation. To surrender control is to fall free. Yes perhaps there is an analogy here to be drawn with death but it also could be about a union found, so long after a wilderness or dark solitude (thus the somber soundscape, perhaps an echo from a previous time)

i prefer to see 'falling free' as the powerful freedom to excel to our zenith when we have surrendered our hearts to love. The solemn ending for me is the realisation that live will end, but love never dies.

SADNESS in not synonymous with HOPELESSNESS (wonder what sheila thinks ?)

The theme of MDNA is the dissolution of Madonna and Guy Ritchie's marriage.

This song is heartbreaking but in the end, empowering. To me the key line is "when I let loose the need to know, we're both free, we're free to go". Think about when you break up with someone but you can't help yourself from still wanting to know about them, what they are doing, who they are seeing, it's like torture, but you can't help yourself. This song is about letting all that go, falling free. "Deep and pure our hearts align, now I'm free, I'm free of mine". Their hearts are no longer aligned or intertwined, she's unraveled hers and she feels at peace about it and able to move on with a clear mind.

To me, this is not a hopeless song at all, it's the opposite, she's on her way to having peace of mind and being able to look forward.

You can't fully be whole and "love again" until you have let go, and fallen free. IMO this is one of the most beautiful and mature songs she has ever written.

It seems like this song is aligned with her spiritual practices, in that letting go of concepts and definitions is freedom.

"I let loose the need to know...We're both free, free to go...": Seems like this involves a relationship but could be any relationship (love and/or family). Instead of struggling with the need to understand the difficulties in life (especially involving deep relationships), she is free to fall. That is, "falling" but in a positive note, not "falling", like one does "in love", which is binding, but in falling which then would wrought freedom. The letting go is a major buddhistic/Kabbalahistic life practice.

For Madonna, life and love go on-in sad ballad Falling Free, it's hard to let go but things are bound to happen. She accepts her sadness, loss and defeat with dignity and grace. Above all, Madonna is brilliant because she is courageous, brave and vulnerable in accepting sadness and tears. She is crying with dignity. Thank you M.L. Ciccone! Sadness is one of her better qualities.

Everyone interprets this song as a sad song, about break up and letting something end or someone go, but if we look a way around it can also be interpreted as a song about letting flow and Falling in love.

What makes MDNA-Madonna's Third Freakout-work much better than her First and Second Freakouts-Erotica and American Life -is that we hear a voice that is extremely sad with tears and heartbreak. Falling Free is one of the saddest songs Madonna has ever done. It's hard to let go of love-Madonna is crying and her black Gibson J160E guitar cry a very sad song. Sadness is one thing Madonna does exceptionally well. I love Falling Free but there is almost a sheer hopelessness about the song and she can't do anything about it!
