Kingdom Come Lyrics

Run, run, run away
Buy yourself another day
A cold wind's whispering secrets in your ear
So low only you can hear
Mmm

Run, run, run and hide
Somewhere no one else can find
Tall trees bend their leaves
Pointing where to go
Where you will still be all alone
Ooh

Don't you fret, my dear
It'll all be over soon
I'll be waiting here for you

Run, fast as you can
No one has to understand
Fly high across the sky, from here to kingdom come
Fall back down to where you're from
Ooh

Don't you fret, my dear
It'll all be over soon
I'll be waiting here for you
For you, for you

Don't you fret, my dear
(Don't you fret, my dear)
It'll all be over soon
(It'll all be over soon)
I'll be waiting here

Don't you fret, my dear
It'll be over soon
I'll be waiting here for you

This might be a unique interpretation but I think it could be Katniss' Mother to Katniss. "Don't you fret my dear It'll all be over soon I'll be waiting here For you" It sounds like something a mother would say...

After reading ilovenickjonas1494 interpretation something hit me and I had to sign up. It does sound like something a mother would say...just not Katniss's mother who has been emotionally absent in her life for years. It struck me that it's pretty similar to advise Haymitch gave her and so maybe this isn't a feminine voice, but a masculine one.

Perhaps this could be interpreted as unheard words from her father in "kingdom come" or the next life. Especially the lines "A cold wind's whispering secrets in your ear" and "Tall trees bend and lean pointing where to go". They spent years in the woods together, him teaching her about nature and how to hunt and forage. There is this other worldliness about it, as if he'll be on the wind whispering and bending those trees to guide her. He hopes she can run and survive BUT if not he'll be waiting for her. Even if she doesn't make it, its nothing to fret about because it will end quickly and they can be together again.

I know from interviews for Safe and Sound that Joy and John Paul read all the books and had intentionally kept the lyrics vague so it could be open to multiple interpretations for multiple characters. I love the movies but I didn't think they quite conveyed the damaged relationship between Katniss and her mother and the strong bond she had with her father before his death.

Happy interpreting!

This song is on The Hunger Games soundtrack and I think it's about Rue - about her running and hiding until she joins up with Katniss. But sadly, for Rue, it's all over soon.

I think this song is a malicious message from Katniss' opponents.

"Run fast if you can"- When Cato and the others were chasing Katniss up a tree (literally) and he said something along the lines of this. It could also be when Peeta was telling her to run.

"Don't you fret my dear, it'll all be over soon"- Something along the lines of what Clove was saying to Katniss before Thresh took her (Clove) out.

"I'll be waiting here, for you."- When Katniss' opponents were waiting for her to get out of the tree.

"Fall back down to where you're from"- Once again, they were waiting for her to get down (or fall) from the tree. I'm not sure if they knew of Rue's niche for climbing trees, but they could also be speaking about her. Because she's always in the trees, they could be being sarcastic by telling her to "fly...from here to kingdom come", and spiteful when they say "fall back down to where you're from." It would make sense because if Rue falls from the trees, she's falling to the ground of grass, dirt, weeds etc. and she is from District 11, whose industry is agriculture. See the connection? :)

Really know one can see further then The Hunger Games for inspiration? "Tall trees bend their knees" "Run away, buy yourself another day" (but probably not many more as there is nowhere to run. And the African influences in rhythm and singing? How about the Rwanda Genocide of 1994. With the infamous words broadcasted on the radio to start the killings "cut down the tall trees". No wonder is doesn't exactly fit to any part of the movie as the inspiration was in chilling events from the real world.

Song Meaning

So, this is definitely about the Careers and Katniss.

Run, run, run away / Buy yourself another day - The careers are mocking Katniss and telling her to try and escape them so she can survive for one more day.

A cold wind whispering secrets in your ear / So low, only you can hear - The atmosphere is cold and tense as Katniss has to be on her toes all the time. She could get attacked anytime and she has to be prepared t escape.

Run, run, run and hide / Somewhere no one else can find - Again, the Careers are teasing Katniss, telling her to run and hide from them.

Tall trees bend their lean pointing where to go / Where you will still be all alone - The trees seem to bend in a direction to show the way where Katniss can hide, but even there she is alone with no one to help her.

Don't you fret my dear / It'll all be over soon / I'll be waiting here / For you - There are two interpretations.Since this song concerns the Careers, it could be Clove telling Katniss that she'll be waiting for her (Katniss) and that she is going to kill her, but Katniss needn't worry because her death will be quick. Another interpretation is, as someone before me said in their comment, Katniss' mom telling her not to worry and it will get over soon, and then Katniss can come back home where her mom will be waiting for her.

Run fast if you can / No one has to understand - Yet again, the Careers taunting Katniss, telling her to run as fast as she can to escape them. There is nothing to understand here. It's survival of the fittest. You have to keep yourself from getting killed.

Fly high across the sky from here to kingdom come / Fall back down to where you're from - You can even fly if you want, fly as far and as long as you want, but you're gonna have to come down eventually and then we'll kill you.

The rest of the song is just repetition of some of the lines. Hope you like my interpretation! Comments and opinions will be appreciated.

I really think it is Katniss's mother watching the games. She feels pain and is kind of willing Katniss to do certain things to survive; she wishes she could communicate to her but she can't, she is telling Katniss, find a place to hide, run fast, don't worry about what the others think, don't fret I'll be waiting for you when you return. "Fly high across the sky from here to kingdom come Fall back down to where you're from" She's willing Katniss to survive, and walking the edge of panic at seeing her in the Games.

@sophiecissylunarose and another thing to clarify, what is telling to me is the emotion with which the song is sung. It doesn't sound taunting, it sounds full of agony and longing. Which is why I am fairly certain it is about wanting your loved ones to be safe and return to you.
