How Long Must I Wait? Lyrics
I walk with you everywhere I go
But it don't seem like you know/
I sang your promise like an old songbird
But I don't suppose you heard.
I climbed my Voice to the top of my lungs
But I'm standin' on the tip of my tongue.
And all I see only looks the same,
The picture is the frame.
Oh soul of mine,
Look out and see,
My time that is to be
I fight for you.
My love is war.
The battle of Baltimore.
I took you back then,
I'll take you down the road.
You're with me on my own.
Oh soul of mine,
Look out and see,
My time that is to be
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
But it don't seem like you know/
I sang your promise like an old songbird
But I don't suppose you heard.
But I'm standin' on the tip of my tongue.
And all I see only looks the same,
The picture is the frame.
Look out and see,
My time that is to be
My love is war.
The battle of Baltimore.
I took you back then,
I'll take you down the road.
You're with me on my own.
Look out and see,
My time that is to be
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?
How long must I wait?

I see a more spiritual reference. "I sang your promise" and "I walk with you everywhere I go" seem to be directed towards a deity of some sort. He goes on further to say "All I see is the same, The picture is the frame". (I love this line) It's the sort of perception one might get if they get caught up in life. The picture being life, and the frame (what holds the picture up, or what distinguishes the picture) is the same. He's trapped in this thought that is overwhelming him. He then calls for his soul to see what "my time will be". He's asking for solace. He wants his soul to be content with the time he has and will have. Then finally he screams out "How long must I wait." He wants this solace. That's my interpretation.
@freetocare I appreciate your response. And feel similarly. (10 yrs after :)

I think this song is about him wanting someone and he is fighting for this person but the attraction doesn't seem to be progressing. Thus the question "how long must I wait?"
This is my favorite Dr. Dog song. I hope more people will give it a listen
My interpretation, though undoubtedly incorrect, is just what I envisioned. She likes this other guy but she leads him on. She knows that the other relationship can't last and she very likely likes him. But despite him proving his love, she stays with the other. Again I know it's probably not what he was feeling but that's what it makes me feel like. I thoroughly agree with yours. And I love this song to, everything about it. Pure music.

Scott seems like he's putting his all into a relationship. There's a lot of feeling in this one.. he seems like he's watching them fall apart a little, and he's wanting her to give a little more of her into him.
