I try not to have arguments with songs, since they don't really have the capacity to defend themselves, but I feel like suggesting to this song that perhaps the fellow took nice and easy steps because he knew very well that he could stumble and go down. The rest of the song is rather cryptically about the guy being on the run from an unknown situation or unknown pursuers. But in the end he tries to be optimistic that things will sort themselves out.
