The opening verse helps set the tone for the following song, depicting the writer's emotional state and the vulnerability they are experiencing, The line "I have seen the vision, the vision of my curse" suggests a foreboding sense of impending doom or trouble that haunts the protagonist. Presumably, they had entered the tombs in the Valley of the Kings and left feeling anxious and afraid. They believe they're now cursed and write this letter as a warning and a possible goodbye.
