He's depressed and remembering better times to try to feel better. He sacrifices a part of himself to have someone and he's left empty without them. He doesn't want to leave her, instead he wants to hold on to the only thing he has left, which is her. Characters remain the same because she's either the only one he wants or he can't find anyone else. It's a disaster story because there is an infinite struggle in him to try to hold on to her.
