No one can recognize "Mars" from Holst\'s "Planets Suite?"\nJust as Pink Floyd explored the power of purposeful repetition ("Set Your Controls for the Heart of the Sun" -> "One of these Days I\'m Gonna Cut You into Little Pieces"), King Crimson/Fripp explored the same ("Devil\'s Triangle [Mars]" -> "Starless").\nFor copyright reasons, they/Fripp could not call it "Mars" or give it proper citation.
Peter Sinfield's website, songsouponsea, includes the meaning of the lyrics for it as well as the other tracks on this album, archived.
While it is an instrumental, Sinfield went on to say, on the title and its sections, it's about the death of this crumbling world as it descends into a hellish storm that only keeps building and destroying what was. However, in this destruction, there is a rebirth at the end, which brings peace. This end flows perfectly into the final track on the album's original release, Peace - An End.
I don't know why it has the "ahhhhhhhhhhh" from The Court of the Crimson King at one part.
