I get the impression that this song is about a man who believes that he is so damaged and unworthy that he is not good enough for this woman. Because he believes he is undeserving of her, he cannot stay with her and knows that he will inevitably leave. Probably this is why he is 'flying solo' and 'never did plan on a wife'. He doesn't believe he is worthy of love and connection, especially from someone so good and pure.

Ohhhh, He’s married. He isn’t someone that is able to be a faithful partner and he knows this about himself. Yet his wife overlooks all his flaws and loves him like a child hence the lyrics. Probably together forever. He loves her like a child, but can’t watch her die inside knowing what he is doing, so he thinks eventually he has to leave and it’s killing him. Yet he still sees and will always see her childlike beauty and feel he never deserves her anyway.
