Afternoon with the Axolotis Lyrics
A bed of dead leves graced the ground
a quick glance to the other side
we will not be found
send me on some haste command
come close
screams to me I can see you above the grass
and threw it all she seemed secure
downward is heavanward and we are not alone
head thrown back a second time
eyes shut bellzebub can review this without a net
a quick glance to the other side
we will not be found
send me on some haste command
come close
screams to me I can see you above the grass
and threw it all she seemed secure
downward is heavanward and we are not alone
head thrown back a second time
eyes shut bellzebub can review this without a net

Probably my favorite song on the album.
The music is really ambient and spacey, but heavy and mellow at the same time... but that holds true for most Hum songs, which is why I love them so much.
Ok here goes nothing: First of all, the title "Afternoon With the Axolotls" most likely refers to him being around a river because if i can remember correctly an axolotl is an invertebre with external gills found in rivers or anywhere with a fast current.

"She hits the blade with both hands high, downward is heavenward and we are not alone" (and yes it is blade and not cradle) refers to him cutting a women with something sharp, probably out in the woods where no one will find them, and then watching her fall down, soon to die....

I also believe that she wanted this to happen because she had both hands in the air which means she wasnt struggling or trying to fight him off.
"Condensers on and the drop is found, a fingertip trace says to me i can see you and you are wet" at this point he notices that the blood begins to cover her and he places her in the water.
"A bed of dead leaves grace the ground, a quick glance to the other side and we will not be found" just describes the setting, probably deep in the woods away from civilization.
"Symbionts in haste demand come close, screams to me i can see you above the rest" after he put her in the water, symbionts began using her body as a host.
"And through it all she seems secure" goes back to what i was saying about her wanting this to happen.
"Head thrown back, a sickened sigh, eyes shut, beezlebub can we do this without a net" at this point she has died and he asks the devil(beezlebub) for mercy. A net might symbolize him being trapped in hell for eternity.
Well that's what i got out of it. I could be wrong :/
You know, I think you hit the nail on the head there. "Afternoon With the Axolotls" for me the title does some what indicate he is near a river near the "Axolotls" meaning he is spending the the afternoon with them.

"She hits the blade with both hands high, downward is heavenward and we are not alone" Yeah, I agree that it is infact "blade" and not cradle, when she has been cut she hits the floor slowly making her way to heaven and that infact we are not alone as there is life other then...

"A fingertip trace says to me I can see you and you are red" I am pretty he says "red" and not "wet", to me this means that when she is on the ground he looks at his hands and sees he is covered in blood.
"A bed of dead leaves grace the ground, a quick glance to the other side and we will not be found" just describes the setting, probably deep in the woods away from civilization." I think you nailed it there, I always thought the line "a quick glance to the other side" part had something to do with death and going to the other side (Heaven)? But I think yours makes more sense.
"And through it all she seems secure" goes back to what i was saying about her wanting this to happen. This line although it would fit with the rest of the meaning, I am pretty sure he says "she was so pure"? I could be wrong, but that would mean he saw as been innocent and peaceful as she was dying.
"Head thrown back, a sickened sigh, eyes shut, beezlebub can we do this without a net" at this point she has died and he asks the devil(beezlebub) for mercy. A net might symbolize him being trapped in hell for eternity. Spot on here, but I always think the net somewhat symbolises the devil not taking her soul? As she has been put in the river or near a river and you can catch fish with nets, its like hes asking the devil not to take her or "catch" her.
Meaning aside, this song is amazing!!
Hmm was listening to the live bootleg of one of their shows and Matt goes on to say this song is about a a guy and a girl. The girl is powered by satan, and there is a wierd seduction outdoors between the couple. And there are Axolotls on floor, thousands on them, and they are the conductors for the lighting rod between satan and the girl, so their helping her and at the end she decides she doesnt need any help. Wierd hahaha!

I love robotrippins take on this song, its definantly a story weaved together and I cant decide what it could be a metaphor FOR. I imagine a car crash somewhere deep in the woods, and a woman is lost in the woods and comes to a clearing or a river, and finds her broken body lieing there, and has to come to terms with her own death. Its like a narative of the death of a woman and how she surrenders and accepts death, downward is heavenward could mean that the frightening and nihilistic acceptance of death is not so bad, its like heaven to finally be able to aknowledge and accept the truth no matter how painful it is.
again another GREAT song from HUM...
But for me... this song just is about doing drugs... i mean isn't beelzebub a demon??? and why would you ask him to do something "without a net"... I'm not going to analyze each sentence, but the first time i heard this song I immediately thought it was about doing drugs and I have not since changed my mind... also the length of the song without lyrics might suggest that a person listening to the song is probably "out of sorts" anyway...
Just my interpretation thanks!!!

"Afternoon With The Axolotls"
She hits the blade with both hands high. Downward is heavenward, and we are not alone. Condensers on and the drop is found, a fingertip trace says to me I can see you and you are wet.
A bed of dead leaves grace the ground, a quick glance to the other side and we will not be found. Symbionts in haste demand come close, screams to me I can see you above the rest. And through it all she seems secure. Downward is heavenward, and we are not alone. Head thrown back, a sickened sigh, her eyes shut, Beelzebub can we do this without a net?
