This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
I want a little sugar in my bowl
I want a little sweetness down in my soul
I could stand some lovin', oh so bad
Feel so funny, I feel so sad
I want a little steam on my clothes
Maybe I could fix things up so they'll go
What's the matter daddy, come on, save my soul
I need some sugar in my bowl, I ain't foolin'
I want some sugar in my bowl
You been acting different I've been told
Soothe me, I want some sugar in my bowl
I want a little steam on my clothes
Maybe I can fix things up so they'll go
What's the matter daddy, come on, save my soul
I want some sugar in my bowl, I ain't foolin'
I want some sugar
In my bowl
In my bowl

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Love this woman. Love her music. The song is about lovin'...or sex, if that's what you prefer. I love it. Can't wait to continue to see the weight go so I can go on a sugar diet!
That sounds kind of silly to me.
It's what you do. Oh, I'm sorry. Lust to Love is your forte, only how's that been working for you;) What excuse did you make up to not be with her tonight? Hiding Tonight, as the song goes? Don't worry, there's always tomorrow.
Simultaneous communicating? LOL. I'll help you out and end this.
Going wonderfully, let me tell ya. ;) Huh? Hiding from who? You lost me...
Again. What???
Give it time. Be sure to be honest with this one. It would be a first and maybe she'd stick around longer. Then again, maybe not ;) Now go down some poison and get the fuck away from me...
No, it's you who lost me. Have a wonderful week you piece of shit.
Excuse me? What the fuck did I do?
Nothing. You were just being the same stagnant, boring, predictable sellout that you've been for decades. You are the poster child for self-fulfilling prophecies. Now I'm going to talk with friends online before reading myself to sleep. Anything is better than spending time with you.
Then, why dont you go find someone who's not boring. hmm? Dont know what the hell made you so damn cranky.
They've already found me, asshole. I just wouldn't open the door...until today. And from this day forward thanks to you. Enjoy those intellectual conversations and knowing that whenever s/he looks at you s/he has no clue who she's sleeping beside; under; on top of; behind; etc. Man, I am funny. But you, you're the real joke. I hope you laugh all week long (when you're not boinking the young one, of course:)
You are so incrediblyt stale; you haven't grown an inch in how many years? Rhetorical question. Just a footnote to this conversation. I've allowed you to waste too much of my time and life. Sleep well. If I'm lucky you won't awaken.
What?! Are you doing OK? Sincerely asking...How are you?
Thanks.
I'm finally fine. You'll see. The silence will let you know just how well I am doing. Now you can have the last word 'cause again...you've wasted too much of my time. And I perfer to talk with interesting people who aren't cowards.
I'm neither, jerk.
