Well, you're pretty close elisha. I'd say that he's saying that he's tried to live the way that whomever is in charge wanted him to live like, but he didn't like it, so he thinks it's only fair that he should be able to try out his way of life. This song can really connect to teenagers like me very well. I should be able to try to live like I want to, because I gave my parents' way a shot, but I don't like it.
