Great song, this whole album is very relatable. My take on this song is based on my own experience. I was "under the spell" of this girl so to speak. She was the type that buys into all of the current social trends only not to an extreme extent. In the beginning it seemed like she held all of the cards. She was always the "popular girl" in my mind, years went by and we both grew up, me more than her. After being through enough and realizing she would never quite see things the way I did our roles become reversed in my eyes, I began to realize my individuality and difference from the rest of mainstream society is a gift rather than a curse. Its that glorious moment that is captured perfectly through the lines "You were my crutch, now I've escaped your clutch, so how is that worm's eye view? I have grown two broad wings and now I'm above you" To me Max Bemis will always be the 1st Max Bemis rather than the next Bob Dylan but with that being said its hard not to say Max isnt a Modern Day Dylan

To me this is Max leaving drugs behind, but not forgetting where they took him (using a girl as the allegory "rather than abstain from you"). A better explanation is, we will never learn from our past mistakes if we keep burying and forgetting our history..

yellowcatredcat, I dont think he is looking down on the group. But more just the individuals that rely on substances to have a "good" time. You should be able to have an awesome time without drugs or alochol, while im sure most would agree they make it better, not necessary.

This song is so amazing. I can't believe people are not commenting on the songs from this new album. Every song so good and different. Def has old school Say Anything in it. Max is such a good song writer and is always improving but staying to his roots and thats what I love about him and this band.
