Ayla Lyrics

Aimless am I
Listless I'm the blunt of the knife
Drifting to the corners of life
Ayla

I could make something right
Gentle with the kindness I'd like
So often it's a trick of the light
Ayla

And we wait for love
In the shape of us

Until the wait is over,
under halcyon skies
Until the wait is over,
for an innocent life

It's a weight off my mind
I could trust you, you could tell me it's fine
I could sew you a stitch and save nine
Ayla

None more admired
and out of soft focused desire
From honeyed milk to funeral pyre
Ayla

And we'll wait for love
In the shape of us
But the state of us
Daedalus

The wait is over,
under halcyon skies
The wait is over,
for an innocent life

The wait is over,
under halcyon skies
The wait is over,
for an innocent life

Until the wait is over
The wait is over
The wait is over

First of all, this album is brilliant. I think all the songs just go so well with the album title. I really fell for this song when the album came out. I think it is beautiful and I just love the first verse. I can really relate to it:

"Aimless am I Listless I'm the blunt of the knife Drifting to the corners of life"

I think that first part is amazingly written. Anyway, I believe this song is about being lonely and bored with life and trying to get out of that mindset. The first verse really shows that (to me at least). And the narrator of the song is probably in love with 'Ayla', and he thinks she can make him happy and change his life around for the better. He dreams about being with her:

"It's a weight off my mind I could trust you, you could tell me it's fine I could sew you a stitch and save nine Ayla"

That's my short interpretation of it. I really don't have any other explanation, but I would be more than glad to get feedback and other ideas to what this might be about. Thanks.

  • he is constantly looking for her and "them" in his other relationships, all in vain, an illusion, no other can replace her.

It's a weight off my mind I could trust you, you could tell me it's fine I could sew you a stitch and save nine Ayla

  • He dreams of a way to fix the past things between them. If only he could go back and undo hurting her first ("make one stitch"), he'd save himself the 9 times pain she caused him when she left.

The wait is over, under halcyon skies The wait is over, for an innocent life

  • in his fantasies they get back together and everything, the pain, the wait, is over.

There is no doubt this song is about someone who's tormented by a bad breakup or loss of his loved-one. I am thinking this is the story of a guy rather than a girl, but it can go both ways, of course.

Aimless am I Listless I'm the blunt of the knife Drifting to the corners of life Ayla

  • He is experiencing loss of direction and meaning of his own life. His personal life goes on, but he does not enjoy it, and sees himself as a spectator rather than participant. He'd rather be somewhere else, sometimes else, probably back with her.

And we wait for love In the shape of us But the state of us

  • he is constantly looking for her

Personally, I think it's someone (or perhaps a couple) looking back at before they got together.

I think the first two verses are one of the couple looking back at how shy they were (Aimless am I, Listless I'm the blunt of the knife, Drifting to the corners of life), & how they weren't sure if they should approach the other person (I could make something right, Gentle with the kindness I'd like, So often it's a trick of the light).

The chorus is the couple looking back at how they liked each other, without knowing how the other felt (And we wait for love, In the shape of us, Until the wait is over, under halcyon skies, Until the wait is over, for an innocent life).

The last two verses are where one of them finally tells the other how they feel (It's a weight off my mind,I could trust you, you could tell me it's fine, I could sew you a stitch and save nine), & getting the response they both want, & quite possibly need (None more admired, and out of soft focused desire, From honeyed milk to funeral pyre).

The song then leads into how they are going to try to stop each other from flying too high, by using Daedalus as a reference point.

That's just how I see it. I think there's an Ayla out there for all of us, you just haven't necessarily met them yet.
