Shadows pt. 1 and 2

I knew how good we'd had it
ever since I left through your cedar door

in the house where we’d call nothing, together
until the walls called back for more

and the way we fell towards the center,
placing inside each other
little saints we'd found on the river floor

but smallness overtook us
and eventually
you asked me to go –
and now I know

sadness is real, but it’s scared of the light
and inside your walls it was always very bright
but walking here outside it’s got me wishing, and I think I might
come to your doorstep, and ask you just to open up
so if you hear me at your doorstep, I’m asking you to open up,
so don’t open up
or I’ll open up as well -- you’ll see --
and that way maybe
we’ll erase our shadows for the night

our bodies build a fire
and the kettle sings with the choir

I knew how good we had it ever since I left through your cedar door
on the day that smallness overtook us, and our shadows won the war..
and they win the war.
