Good Day At The Races Lyrics
In my bedroom there are books on architecture
Bury myself in them listening to records
In the springtime we will all be graduated
Parents wonder why I haven't started dating
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Way down low but I got somebody to love
Mother took me to the daughter of a pastor
Hoping girls and god would make my heart beat faster
Sundays we'd drop acid talk about the weather
Til you took my hands said "I aint what you're after"
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Way down low but I got somebody to love
And mother cried, father took a long walk
Hasn't let his eyes meet mine he barely talks
And I am scared, scared of introductions
Scared of repercussions, and discussions in the dark
But you are strong, I turn you on and take it easy
Ooh, when all you got is gone
Ooh, thank you for your song
Like a good day at the races make it right
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Way down low but I got somebody to love
Ooh, I'm way down low
But I got somebody to
Bury myself in them listening to records
In the springtime we will all be graduated
Parents wonder why I haven't started dating
Way down low but I got somebody to love
Hoping girls and god would make my heart beat faster

And I am scared, scared of introductions
Scared of repercussions, and discussions in the dark
But you are strong, I turn you on and take it easy
Ooh, thank you for your song
Like a good day at the races make it right
Way down low but I got somebody to love
But I got somebody to

I thought it was "hoping girls and god would make my heart beat faster"?
I think the song is about a gay guy, and his parents don't know that, so they try to find him a girlfriend, but she realises he's gay ("I ain't what you're after"). Eventually, he comes out to his parents, and they have a really hard time with this news, they're disappointed in him.
I agree totally. I think its a really good, genuine coming out story.

"And mother cried, father took a long walk Hasn't let his eyes meet mine he barely talks" -The same thing happened to me. when I came out, My mom just cried and my dad was solemn, and kind of disconnected himself.

"And I am scared, scared of introductions Scared of repercussions, and discussions in the dark" -Introducing yourself as gay post-coming-out is HARD. Its scary because you are always fearing being judged. It takes some time to get used to. Finding a gay in a sea of straight men is hard (Rural Canada... I understand completely) and one can be scared of what's to come.
"Parents wonder why I haven't started dating" -hmm, I wonder why? :P
"Til you took my hands said "I aint what you're after"" -sometimes, your friends (or in this case, your girlfriend) realizes you're gay before you do, or at least before you come to terms with it.
"Hoping girls ain't got what makes my heart beat faster" -I think this lyric is wrong, I believe its actually: "Hoping girls and God would make my heart beat faster" -It sounds like it, and it would make sense is its the pastor's daughter. I feel his mom could see it coming through, and decided to take him to the "wholesome pastor" to "fix him" or "set him straight" (mind the pun)
Anyways, I love the song, and if it IS actually about coming out, I think its a fantastic portrayal of a realistic situation. Keep listening to Hollerado!
Yeah, I agree, I'm pretty sure it's "Hoping girls and god would make my heart beat faster", it just makes more sense.

Also, yeah I'm pretty sure it's about homophobia, because at this concert I went to, Menno was like, "This song's about homophobia"

i don't think the narrator is in love with a real person "scared of introductions" he is too introverted i think he is in love with a musician that plays his favourite songs "Bury myself in them listening to records" "I turn you on and take it easy" "thank you for your song, (let a good day at the races make it right)"
Specifically, he is in love with Freddie Mercury from Queen and listening to the album "day at the races"
this interpretation would make the Hollerado song an answer to Freddie Mercury's famous cry for "someone to love" in which the narrator and other introverts who escape through music are the person Freddie is looking for and their introverted and personal experience of music via their own playback devices gives each person the ability to have a separate relationship with the artist even though in this case, the artist is dead.
It is about music and how it touches an individual, specifically in the modern age where we can interact personally with it.
I heard in a live performance video that the song is about Freddie Mercury. I like this one best.

Lol, at the show I was at he said "This song is about Freddie Mercury and having butt sex". So i believe that it's a combination of the two interpretations.
