Gold on the Ceiling Lyrics
Down in the waves
She screams again
Roar at the door
My mind can’t take much more
I could never drown
They wanna get my
They wanna get my
Gold on the ceiling
I ain’t blind
Just a matter of time
Before you steal it
It’s alright
Ain’t no blood in my eye
Clouds covered love's
Barbed-wire fence
Strung up, strung out
I just can’t go without
I could never drown
They wanna get my
They wanna get my
Gold on the ceiling
I ain’t blind
Just a matter of time
Before you steal it
It’s alright
Ain’t no blood in my eye
They wanna get my
They wanna get my
Gold on the ceiling
I ain’t blind
Just a matter of time
Before you steal it
It’s alright
Ain’t no blood in my eye
Gold on the ceiling
I ain’t blind
Just a matter of time
Before you steal it
It’s alright
Ain’t no blood in my eye
She screams again
Roar at the door
My mind can’t take much more
I could never drown
They wanna get my
Gold on the ceiling
I ain’t blind
Just a matter of time
Before you steal it
It’s alright
Ain’t no blood in my eye
Barbed-wire fence
Strung up, strung out
I just can’t go without
I could never drown
They wanna get my
Gold on the ceiling
I ain’t blind
Just a matter of time
Before you steal it
It’s alright
Ain’t no blood in my eye
They wanna get my
Gold on the ceiling
I ain’t blind
Just a matter of time
Before you steal it
It’s alright
Ain’t no blood in my eye
I ain’t blind
Just a matter of time
Before you steal it
It’s alright
Ain’t no blood in my eye

I was listening to this song, and I think I'm hearing what is printed here, Ain't no God in My eye.
The line about they want to get my Gold on the ceiling, Sounds very much like they are talking about how churches (Mostly Catholic) take tithes, they want Your gold, and they use it, to put it on their ceiling. Like Sistine chapel style.
Saying they want my gold, and its only a matter of time before they just take it forcefully, because their reasons for doing so (True Belief they are doing what God wants) will be strong enough that if I dont give it, they'll begin to take it.
Granted there is the whole Thall Shalt not steal, but who knows.
This is just what I thought about when I first heard it, It seems like a rebuking of churches and the way they take people's money.
Thank you so much - that makes a lot more sense than anything I was thinking or reading on line. The term "Gold On The Ceiling" was driving me nuts.

That is so very correct. Thank you for this interpretation. I was completely clueless about what this song meant and why it was titled "Gold on the Ceiling", for about two-three weeks.

Explain this "its only a matter of time before they just take it forcefully." I don't know of any church that forces tithes, and the Catholic church isn't exactly known for guilting people out of their last buck.

I tend to agree with eaterofcats, below, as he gets at the essential themes of the CD which do not seem very concerned with religion - only women.

Maybe "Ain't no God in my eye" is less literal and simply means he is not judging peoples actions critically...

Decent interpretation for this cryptic-as-hell song, but I'm thinking it might be about women. Gold-digging women. He mentions a woman in the first verse, and I'm pretty sure he says 'ain't no guard in my heart' which would mean he's vulnerable. The line 'just can't go without' also hints at this. But what the fuck do I know? I didn't write it.

FTR, the line is "guarding my high", not "God in my eye".

I'm open to the possibility that this is an anti-religion song. But that interpretation doesn't really make sense when you pay attention to the pronouns.

"THEY wanna get MY gold on the ceiling".
"THEY wanna get MY gold on the ceiling".
This cannot be a reference to the Sistine Chapel because it was never Michelangelo's. The Catholic Church wasn't stealing from him, they were literally patronizing him as an artist.

"I ain’t blind just a matter of time before YOU steal it"

Now the narrator's referring...
Now the narrator's referring to the Church with a 2nd person pronoun instead of a 3rd person? Again, doesn't make sense.
I think this is song about addiction. Probably heroin.
down in the waves she screams again: She had to get out and take a walk cuz she's freakin' out. roar at the door, my mind can't take much more: an argument with his dealer over past dues I could never drown: No matter how bad as it can gets, he could never commit suicide.
They wanna get my gold on the ceiling, They can't afford their drugs so someone wants their gold out of his mouth to pay up an old debt.
I ain't blind It's just a matter of time Before you steal it: They will come and take the gold fillings of they don't pay up.
Ain't no God in my eye: As it is printed on the dollar; "in god we trust" dosen't apply here
Clouds cover love: domestic trouble Barbed wire snarl: she's pissed, she's jones'n Strung up, strung out: he's really jones'n I just can't go without: he's really, really jones'n
The lyrics are wrong. Here's the lyrics from the official Rocksmith video game DLC version of the song:
Down in the waves She screams again Roar at the door My mind can't take much more
I could never drown in
They wanna' get my (2x)
CHORUS Gold on the ceiling I ain't blind It's just a matter of time Before you steal it It's all right Ain't no guarding my high
Clouds covered love's Barbed wire snare Strung up strung out I just can't go without
I could never drown in
They wanna get my (2x)
CHORUS
what is deifference between the lyrics you posted and the ones posted here? sorry . . . i fail to find the "other" words . . . :)

@clarkhudgens "Ain't no guarding my high" Was previously written as "ain't no god in my heart" This comment was written two years ago, obviously the lyrics have been changed to fit it. You come in with a condescending attitude but you can't even use simple logic.

Rocks in a good way.
new spin: Parents, grandparents and anybody who has a kid has blamed their kid for grey hairs. Gold on the ceiling = blond hair. So my feeling is that the song is about the struggle of parenthood. The God reference in my interpretation is not God or a deity in any way. It refers to creation, power and knowing whats best for his/your kid/s.
i think he say :
"They wanna get my They wanna get my Gold on the ceiling I ain't blind It's just a matter of time Before you steal it It's alright Ain't no guard in my house"
i thinks it's like: take all my money, and my possessions, i don't fuck*** care.
I always thought he said:
"It's alright Ain't nobody my height"
Which I thought was cool, because the gold was on the ceiling.
Lol, that would be cool.
Lol, that would be cool.
The only other version I can find of different lyrics is instead of god they say Blood. And on the SNL version you can clearly hear him say God.
I have found an alternate... "Ain't no GUARDIN' my eye" which could also be "Ain't no GUARN IN my eye", which makes more sense, given the song's talk of stealing.

AND the official Black Keys fan blog has a thread about this song, and also has considered "guardin'" as the possible word.

What the hell is GUARN..?
What the hell is GUARN..?
This song's probably just about Dan being Jewish
Why is almost every song interpreted to be a hymn about drugs? sigh IDK, when I listened to this song, it sounded to me like it was simply about someone who is aware of people are trying to us him. He is not judging them "Aint no God in my eye" and knows that this is just part of life that can't be stopped and that eventually he will fall victim, maybe even by acquiescence. But is saying that in the big picture it is not what's important to him in his life...
