Cars and Guitars Lyrics

If I choke boy you start me up again.
Restring my wires, you know this gear box,
Can make the shift polish my rims.

Oh, damned if you do, damned if you don't.
I swear it seems late, boy,
I've even curved this body to fit your bow.

Still the rain can confuse the thoughts that come,
Come in rhythm.
'Cause it never was the cars and guitars,
That came between us.

Still the thought says,
"What if I?
Keep on driving,
Keep on driving."

"Yeah that whip has skirt,"
You said it proud.
Sometimes I'd watch her idle while you'd tune her up,
Me with my silencer on.
You and your crocodile clip,
Me and my alligator pears, yeah.
All tricked out for the trip,
That slid into a spin.

Still the rain can confuse the thoughts that come,
Come in rhythm.
'Cause it never was the cars and guitars,
That came between us.

Still the thought says,
"What if I?
Keep on driving,
Keep on driving."

You say that "I miss you."
You stop in at my drive-thru,
You know who you'll order some some boy.
'Cause it never was the cars and guitars,
That came between us.

Still the thought says,
"What if I?
Keep on driving,
Keep on driving,
Keep on driving."

If I choke boy you start me up again.
Restring my wires, you know this gear box,
Can make the shift polish my rims.

Um... from what I've read this has nothing to do with children. I think it has to do with a guy, presumably husband. I'm looking for the quote...

"Do you ever start screaming in a car? Just having an argument, reliving an argument? And you go, 'What is it gonna take? What language is it going to take for us to communicate on this issue?' So I thought, what is the language that this guy understands? So I decided to become a car. One with the stick that he can put his hands on and maneuver. He can polish my rims. He can step inside me. Then I decided I could also become a guitar. He could pick me up and play me and I could listen to what he's trying to say. If I could just change my shape we could maybe get through this because it never was the cars and guitars that came between us."

This is a good, singable tune. And thank god for that, because this metaphor is strained and awful.

At first I couldn't see how the lyrics to this song fit Tori's explanation about her being the bad guy for once. She's the mother that runs away from her child in this song.

But now I see it, clear as day! "I've even curved this body to fit your bow," is what the mother is saying to the child, she just tries and tries her best but now it's over. She's done. She keeps on driving without stopping to pick him up from school.

I've read the same quote.

I think it's about a breakdown of communication, and finding a way to bridge the gap. And her molding herself allows for that bridge...

On a more personal note, to me this song is also about how if in a relationship there's problems, you can't keep on blaming it on basic differences. You can't keep on letting issues such as gender and difference of opinion to keep getting in the way cos those things won't go away and then there'll be no relationship at all.

It's not about children or parenthood at all and reading the lyrics make that very clear to me (and any idiot, I would assume).
