I Am A Master Hunter Lyrics
I am a master hunter
I cured my skin, now nothing gets in
Nothing not as hard as it tries
You want a woman 'cause you wanna be saved, well I’ll tell you that I got a little l-lot on my plate
You wanna a woman who will call your name; it ain’t me babe
No, no, no, it ain’t me babe
I don’t stare at water anymore,
Water doesn’t do what it did before.
It took me in and to the edge of insane when I only meant to swim,
I nearly put a bullet in my brain when the rhythm took me in
I am a master hunter
You let men into your bed
Do they not know you well?
They can’t get into my head
They don’t have a hope in hell
You see the thing is we are so alone
There’s nothing we can share
You could get me on the telephone, but you won’t keep me there
No, no, no, you won’t keep me there
Take me somewhere I can grow
Give me something, let me go
Tell me something I don't know
Oh, I have some news
I have some news
Is this what you think I do
In life when I'm not being used
You see you're not sad you life for the blues
You're not sad you live for the blues
Oh, I have some news
Wrestling the rope from darkness is no fucking life that I would choose
I am a master hunter
I cured my skin, now nothing gets in
Nothing not as hard as it tries
I am a master
I am a master
I am a master hunter
I cured my skin, now nothing gets in
Nothing not as hard as it tries

This is such a beautiful song - I relate to it so much and it's really empowering!
I guess she's been hurt by the person she loved so she's decided she won't let anyone else in (a reccurring theme in her recent songs, it seems) and this is her declaring her independence and that she doesn't need anyone.
I'm guessing there was a pretty dark spell after the break up (the bit about water - like the part about dogs in Pray For Me). She's also slept around a bit, though is proud that the men don't know the real her and cannot truly access her, so she hasn't let them in.
Totally agree with your interpretation! Although I think she isn't saying SHE slept around. I think she's referring to other girls who open their legs easily, while she doesn't even open her mind to boys. Just my opinion :)

I do think that this song shows how far along and stronger she's become. Such a great leap in maturity and strength from "New Romantic" to this song!

so so good. can't wait for the fourth album!
This is such an amazing song. I love the Bob Dylan reference. The other interpretation is pretty much spot on in my eyes so I'm not going to say anything more. Bring on album number four!

I love this song. Is my thought totally silly or there is a lesbian reference? "You let men into your bed, they don't know you well, they can't get into my head, they don't have a hope in hell". The person she is talking to sounds like a woman, no?
No man seems to be able to expand her horizons, so she's become a master baiter.
Sort of a sequel to Rambling Man.
I especially like the line "Nothing not as hard as it tries". Implies there are two ways in: force from a knob (in both senses of the word), or a subtle meeting of minds.
