Taken by the Sea Lyrics
Love, lay me down;
Slay me with whispers-
Reassure me that it's alright.
I, I hit the deck;
I hit rock bottom,
But you saw me, then you caught me.
Shining like a ray of hope,
Swift like a turning sea,
Angel to comfort me-
Cradling my head in your hands.
I looked up at the sun and the fog cleared-
I saw you.
And I want you, and that's so terrifying.
And I want you to help put out the fire.
'Cause I am an island,
And you are the ocean-
And all of my sadness,
Taken by the sea.
Fall, I took a fall;
I took it easy.
On the surface I was perfect-
But down, way down below,
I started believing-
I deserved it, was I worthless?
Sinking like a rescue boat, washing right over me-
Vessel is struggling;
Waving both my hands in the air.
Then the blindness of love;
Then your arms all around me.
And I want you, and that's so terrifying.
And I want you to help put out the fire.
'Cause I am an island,
And you are an ocean-
And all of my sadness,
Taken by the sea.
And I want so much to believe
That I won't disappear in the water.
That I won't always be swimming against the tide.
Ohh...
And I want you, is that so terrifying?
And I want you to help put out the fire, oh.
'Cause I am an island,
And you are an ocean-
And all of my sadness,
Taken by the sea-
The sea.
Well I am an island, oh-
But you are the ocean-
And all of my sadness,
Taken by the sea.
Slay me with whispers-
Reassure me that it's alright.
I, I hit the deck;

Simply put, I think it's about desperately wanting someone that you can't or don't have, no matter how hard you try. That the more you try, you more you hope that you can make something happen, even when you question if you're worth as much as you think you are, and if your efforts will ever lead to something. But still, you have to keep on, because "I am an island, and you are the ocean" - you are a small part of yourself, and they are the huge piece that completes you.
That's my thoughts on the song, at any rate.
I think this is a positive song - It's about being able to love the next one as you finally get over the last one and let them go. More importantly, its about rediscovering your self-worth and accepting that you can be loved again (which can be terrifying but is ultimately alright).
I love this song.
