To me, it seems as though Les is taking a very sardonic stance on this song...I could be wrong though. Perhaps he is saying that we put too much stock and money into pro athletes and that it will be the death of us, hence, "Extinction Burst"?

Seems like its about taking a last stand, or an "extinction burst". Like a shining moment in the face of your enemies or your problems (in the face of all you disdain you will burn so bright) where you "get up on your heels and fight" back.
Love the references to pitcher Randy Johnson (he does throw a hard fastball) and Takeru Kobayashi the former hot dog eating champion (or reigning according to Kobayashi himself lol)

An Extinction Burst is based in behavioral psychology and means to try harder to get positive enforcement from something that once gave it but no longer does. The line

is referring to the runners last high before being unable to attain the rush he once got from his sport. Same would work for Randy Johnson and Takeru Kobayashi.
Also makes the line

make more sense.
