Mutual Core Lyrics
I shuffle around
The tectonic plates in my ass
You know I gave it all
Trying to match our continents
To change seasonal shift
To form a mutual core
As fast as your fingernail grows
The Atlantic ridge shifts
To counteract distance
You know I gave it all
Can you hear the effort
Of the magnetic strife?
Shuffling of columns
To form a mutual core
This eruption undoes stagnation
You didn't know that I had it in me
Withheld your love, an unspent capsule
I didn't know you had it in you
You hid the key to our continuity
I didn't know you had it in you
This eruption undoes stagnation
You didn't know, you didn't know
What you resist persists
Nuance makes heat
To counteract distance
I know you gave it all
Offered me harmony
If things were done your way
My Eurasian plate subsumed
Forming a mutual core
This eruption undoes stagnation
You didn't know I had it in me
Withheld your love, an unspent capsule
I didn't know you had it in you
This eruption undoes stagnation
You didn't know I had it in me
This eruption undoes stagnation
You didn't know, you didn't know
The tectonic plates in my ass
You know I gave it all

The song seems to juxtapose a relationship (presumably romantic given other Biophilia tracks) to plate tectonics. Actually quite an accurate comparison when you think about it! All healthy personal relationships require a level of compromise, push-&-pull, give-&-take, reciprocity. And much like how the plates must shift, collide, and subsume, striving for a perfect fit, we must do the same for a relationship to be successful. Even when everyone tries their hardest, things can go wrong (erupt)! Yet, things may be recovered, stabilize, and breathe new life into a relationship/landmass as sparks fly, feelings are expressed, and problems are dealt with.
Wow, that was a lot longer than I thought! Just my thoughts on this excellent song.
I thought your interpretation was spot on although I conceived the line "This eruption undoes stagnation" to be a reference to sexual release. Great interpretation!

The Atlantic ridge drifts not "shifts." It sounds that way to me.
A song about conflict. Strangely beautiful for something that can be so destructive
Bjork is a peace loving being, but conflict is inevitable in life. To me this song sounds like someone who is trying to make peace with an opposing force. It could be romantic, it could be political, it could be mans attempt to sync with nature or god. The point is the the singer is exhausting herself to find some common ground and establish a harmonious relationship. When she sings about eruption it sounds to me like her peaceful efforts have failed and finally she has an outburst of pent up frustrations, much to the surprise of her opponent.
Remember Bjork comes from a country(Iceland) with lots of geologic "conflict". It's a no-brainer that she would write an album based on this idea.
this is for me one of her most sexual songs . and i'm no talking about the obvious "eruption"(wich i think are both about the volcanoes and about a sexual eruption) but more when she sings " my eurasian plate subtumes". i just feel that she gives herself to the one she loves. apart from that i think the lyrics are about her comparing tectonic plates with a sexual relationship.
This song uses a relationship and the tectonic plates as a metaphor for a simply subject: conflict. I love it!
This song is actually about the shift of earth, and no matter how much man tries to intervene mother nature will do what she wants to form a mutual core. Mutual core stands for her plan, and although we may never know the meaning to it the "shifting" will continue until she is done.
