Index Lyrics
I'm a collector I'll collect anything I find
I never throw away anything anyway it's mine
And I'd collect you too if I was given half the chance
And trap you under the glass and add my autograph
I catalog, I preserve, and I index
And file you into my collectable rolodex
I keep me rubbish while other people give away
And keep all of the pieces in a metal tray
Hoard

I'm a collector and I've always been misunderstood
I like the things the people seem to always overlook
I gather up and catalog it in a book I wrote
There's so much now there I forget if I don't make a note
If I collected you and put you in a little cage
I could take you out and study you everyday
It isn't easy being me it's kind of lonely work
My obligation to collecting is my only thirst

This song is about a serial killer who "collects" his victims, or parts of his victims, as trophies. It's a very good and creepy song.
With this in mind, take "Index" to mean cataloguing his "items", or rather, perhaps the index finger of one of his victims.

came just to say the song is so addictive..whether its about a psychopath or just a regular person..its definitely about OBSESSION.
It's based on the pedophile in The Collector by John Fowles. The butterflies and mannequins provide very direct allusions to the book.
It's about a serial killer collecting body parts and stuff, Steven Wilson said it himself to the audience at recent concerts.
This song is very creepy, victims of serial killers should avoid Steven Wilson's music in general!
I think this is one of the more direct songs that Steven Wilson has written based on his personal hobbies. Both him and Mikael Akerfeldt are collectors of music. They both catalogue and preserve their record collections and often spend time thumbing through their vinyl discussing bands that they like. If anything, Steven Wilson may have made this sound more sinister than it actually is. He might have imagined what his life would be like if he had compulsively HAD to buy records and his house looked like an episode of that Hoarders television show. Maybe he feels a little bit like he is one of those people, just a little bit more sane.
Amazing song--For me it's about the s**t we hoard throughout our lives and how we become attached to those things to the point that they begin to own us. Ironically, I'm writing this review in the midst of organizing my mp3 collection which is at about 16k songs. I guess indexing mp3s is OK because it adds value to my life, but sometimes, collecting and hoarding done only for the sake of doing it can be unhealthy.
