I'm a collector, I collect anything I find
I never throw anything away that's mine
And I'd collect you too if I was given half a chance
And trap you under the glass and add my autograph

I catalogue, I preserve, and I index
And file you into my collectible Rolodex
I keep the rubbish what other people give away
And keep all of the pieces in a metal tray

Hoard
Collect
File
Index
Catalogue
Preserve
Amass
Index

I'm a collector and I've always been misunderstood
I like the things that people always seem to overlook
I gather up and catalog it in a book I wrote
There's so much now that I forget if I don't make a note

If I collected you and put you in a little cage
I could take you out and study you every day
It isn't easy being me, it's kind of lonely work
My obligation to collecting is my only thirst

General CommentThis song is about a serial killer who "collects" his victims, or parts of his victims, as trophies. It's a very good and creepy song.

With this in mind, take "Index" to mean cataloguing his "items", or rather, perhaps the index finger of one of his victims.

Song MeaningIt's based on the pedophile in The Collector by John Fowles. The butterflies and mannequins provide very direct allusions to the book.

General CommentIt's about a serial killer collecting body parts and stuff, Steven Wilson said it himself to the audience at recent concerts.

General CommentThis song is very creepy, victims of serial killers should avoid Steven Wilson's music in general!

My InterpretationI think this is one of the more direct songs that Steven Wilson has written based on his personal hobbies. Both him and Mikael Akerfeldt are collectors of music. They both catalogue and preserve their record collections and often spend time thumbing through their vinyl discussing bands that they like. If anything, Steven Wilson may have made this sound more sinister than it actually is. He might have imagined what his life would be like if he had compulsively HAD to buy records and his house looked like an episode of that Hoarders television show. Maybe he feels a little bit like he is one of those people, just a little bit more sane.

General CommentAmazing song--For me it's about the s**t we hoard throughout our lives and how we become attached to those things to the point that they begin to own us. Ironically, I'm writing this review in the midst of organizing my mp3 collection which is at about 16k songs. I guess indexing mp3s is OK because it adds value to my life, but sometimes, collecting and hoarding done only for the sake of doing it can be unhealthy.
