I Am Made Of You Lyrics

In the beginning
I was just a shadow
In the beginning
I was alone

In the beginning, I was blind
Living in a world devoid of light
In the beginning
There was only night

I was shattered
Left in pieces
And I felt so cold inside
Then I called you
From the darkness
Where I hide

I am made of you
I am made of you
I am made of you
I am made of you

In the beginning
You were evolution
A river of salvation
And now I believe

All I wanted
All I needed
Was someone to rescue me
I was drownin'
I was dying
Now I'm free

I am made of you
I am made of you
I am made of you
I am made of you

Here I am now
I can stand now
'Cause your love has made me strong
And forever
You're the singer
I'm the song

I am made of you
I am made of you
I am made of you
I am made of you
I am made of you
I am made of you
I am made of you
I am made of you

A little weird hearing Autotuned Alice, but I really like this song. Alice is the master of doing subtle Christian songs (well, more subtle than most Christian bands I've heard examples of, anyway). This is the opening song on the new "Welcome 2 My Nightmare" CD, and listening to it today, the first thing that popped into my head was, "This is another of Alice's Christian-without-ever-overtly-mentioning Christianity songs". If you listen to the song and envision the singer singing it to God, it makes a lot of sense.

I'm not religious personally, but I've always liked Alice's way of reconciling shock rock and his obviously strong faith. Reading the lyrics to the rest of the CD it doesn't sound like he continues the Christian theme throughout the whole album, which is fine with me, but this is a good song and a good opener.

My Interpretation

First, Alice has said publicly that he does not use autotune on this song. It's a vocoder, which can produce a similar kind of distortion.

Second, one of the things I love most about Alice is that many of his songs can be interpreted on multiple levels. This is a classic example. Your interpretation is one and I certainly will not disparage it, however here's another that may be slightly more consistent with the theme and story-line:

Steven has been living the nightmare for a long time. The human mind often comes up with creative ways to deal with persistent...

I think, Winterhawk, that you're right. And adding to that, yes Alice (Or should we say, Steven) is singing it to god, as a nighttime prayer before going to bed. This is clear, as the 2nd track on the album, Caffeine, is about him having caffeine to try and stay away so he doesn't slip back into the nightmare.

It's like the confessions of Hard Hearted Alice played magnificently by Vince Furneia...you can see his faith has substance and his soul is genuine - "Your love has made me strong"...Now I'm Free...and you are so right about it being subtle...Alice Cooper is not afraid to uncover what Carl Jung identified as The Shadow...most churches take Christ's message of true freedom and turn it into a self-consumed, judgmental, hollow religious exercise - boring and irrelevant and alienating...Jesus wept

I believe he's paying homage to his higher power.

My Opinion

I was so in awe of these lyrics. I've been listening to Alice Cooper since I could walk. My mom had great taste in music fortunately.

I do believe that this song is referring to spirit, light, how we are all one, but I wouldn't say religious, Alice is way too intelligent to buy into that business. Also it's only been recently that we have known of the double slit experiment and the quantum World which goes along with all of this. I really think it's very beautiful this album I will say is definitely in my opinion his best since flush the fashion.

OK, second post - just learning how this system works, so my apologies for repeating basically what I wrote in a reply to winterhawk... I'm thinking now that it needs to be an independent post.

The beauty of Alice's songwriting is that he seems to approach many songs from multiple levels, so perhaps this is a case of layered meaning. One layer at the WTMN/W2MN story level and one at a more personal one.

Here, I'll only present my interpretation from the WTMN/W2MN story perspective:

Steven has been living the nightmare for a long time. The human mind often comes up with creative ways to deal with persistent terror. One of those ways is multiple personalities. This song could be about one of those personalities coming to the surface and speaking to Steven. "Just a shadow", "left in pieces"... could refer to this alternate, previously subdued personality. But now he is able to make his presence known, but not in a direct way. Steven is still the body and still the voice - the new personality can only provide words and thoughts (You're the singer, I'm the song).

"I am made of you" could refer to the fact that the new personality is still part of Steven and comes from Steven's psyche.
