It's Real Lyrics

I don't know who's behind
The wheel
Sometimes I feel like that I don't know
The deal
When I tell you how
I feel
Believe me when I say
It's real

Oh Whoa Whoa Whoa Oh Oh
It's real

I carved our names into
A tree
I walked on decomposing
Leaves
I skated on the frozen
Sea
It's real as far as I
Can see

Oh Whoa Whoa Whoa Oh Oh
It's real

The lyrics are really straightforward: he falls in love, but is hesitant in the first verse as to whether or not it's a long term thing. In the second verse, he realizes that it's real, as far as he can see.

Now entering the 7th month of the best relationship I've ever had with my current girlfriend, this song really hits home. I remember falling in love so quickly but being so scared of the potential burnout. Coincidentally, I've never been more confident that it is built to last.

Love this track.

this just might be the most underrated song of the year

True love is scary first, but permanent after. As CaptBackslap said - the seasons are changing, but the love stays. That's just beautiful. Oh, and I think that's one of the most beautifully simple love songs I've heard :)

Well whether or not this song is about love -it certainly is- first time i heard it i thought it was the most existencialist song i had ever listened to. I loved pretty much it´s naïve ways when it says " I walked on decomposing leaves" as an argument to the main statement "it´s real" which for me means something like "this is it: leaves, trees, frozen lakes.. that´s reality". I prefer to think this way instead of just seeing this cute song as a mere love song. Love you guys.

Such an evocative song, despite its simplicity... I think he's trying to say his life is complicated and he doesn't always feel stable or really know what it's all about (I don't know who's behind the wheel; Sometimes I feel like I don't know the deal) however he's declaring his love to someone and telling them that despite the messiness and insecurity of everything else, he feels his love is definite.

The second verse to me is using the seasons as a metaphor for his love which is as tangible (and 'real') as the seasons and has developed over a period of time. There's also a childish joy and serenity in those lyrics (I carved our names into a tree; I walked on decomposing leaves) which perhaps reflects how he feels around the person.

  • Just my interpretation. Funny how one can glean so much from a song of such few words ^^
My Interpretation

This song literally goes perfect with the track "Taking Off" by Beach Fossils. These two bands are so similar and both so amazing. It's to the point where I can't listen to one of these songs without immediately playing the other one after. I am obsessed with the feel of lo-fi indie music. Definitely check beach fossils out!

@leemess15 I was thinking the same thing! Luv me sum indie lo-fi tunes

I agree with flan3ur. It's existentialist, hence "it's real"!

"I don't know who's behind The wheel Sometimes I feel like that I don't know The deal"

Life is confusing, absurd and illogical. Things happen that don't make sense. Maybe there's someone behind the wheel (possible a God?) but they certainly don't make themselves obvious.

What matters is what we do right here, right now. However absurd some things seem ("I skated on the frozen / Sea"), "it's real as far as I can see", so let's just get on with our lives and enjoy them for how they appear to us.

Although love may seem strange and obscure, it's real, embrace it for what it is ("When I tell you how / I feel / Believe me when I say / It's real"). It's very i easy to idealise and abstract love from what it is, leading one to question whether it's really there. But, look, "I carved our names into / A tree", it's simple: it's love, it's real, it's tangible, it's there, right in front of you; what more evidence do we need?

And, finally, because I've mentioned every line except this one, I thought I need to cover "I walked on decomposing / Leaves". Again, this is just an explanation of how everything we do is "real". He's walking on the decomposing, imperfect leaves of the real world, not some strange transcendental reality.

In Summary: Questioning why things are the way they are (Is there a god? What is love? etc.) doesn't get us anywhere. We just need to live in the real world and enjoy it for what it is.

"I count the leaves into (??) A tree (??)"

I'm almost certain I hear, "I carved our names into a tree". amazing song, nevertheless. just wish I had some solid lyrics for it.

Lyric Correction

I agree with your suggestion. The rest of the lyrics seem solid to me. If they don't seem solid to you, please suggest more corrections, and I will gladly change them. Cheers!

Brilliant how he gently suggests the changing seasons in the second verse. The best track on a really solid (if a touch uniform) album.
