Hold Me Down Lyrics

The road is long
The trees are orange and brown
I'm not afraid to leave this god damn town
I've had enough
I'm gone, I won't look back
I walk awhile, along the rail road track

I'm obliged to you babe, but this place you see, is trying to hold me down
I want more than you can offer (Hold me down)
I am off to anywhere but here (Hold me down)
I keep walking so nobody can hold me down

The others, beware of what they say
Take your pill, and remember to pray
I've had enough
There's too much to live down
I need to break out of this god damn town

I'm obliged to you babe, but this place you see, is trying to hold me down
I want more than you can offer (Hold me down)
I am tired of all the if's and when's (Hold me down)
I keep walking so nobody can hold me down

I need more than you can offer (Hold me down)
I am off to anywhere but here (Hold me down)
I'm still walking cause nobody can hold me down

Hold me down
Whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa
Ooh
Whoa, whoa
Ooh yeah

Yeah

I want more than you can offer
I am off to anywhere but here
I keep walking so nobody can hold me down

Hold me down
Hold me down
Hold me down

I like this song a lot, I'm sure there's many ways to interpret it. To me, when he says "I want more than you can offer", it's like saying "Money isn't everything." Personally, I have a job that pays quite well, but I have to be a completely different person there... and I keep wanting to live in a place where money isn't everything, bc in this world, money can change who you really are inside. In a way I feel like my job is trying to 'Hold me down' by making people that didn't go to college out to be 'lesser' than we are, but most of my friends haven't gone to college and some of them are just cashiers or bartenders, but they seem happier than I am. This song makes me want to just quit my job and live the way I want to (bc TRUST ME, having a lot of money doesn't make me as happy as I thought it would). I might, and this song has made things clearer to me in a way... But like I said, that's how I interpret it personally- what Brandon meant when he wrote the lyrics could be something entirely different, he could have just been trying to make a catchy song... who knows. I'd like to know what other people think.

I like your interpretation WhiteDoveBlackCrow. I think everyone connects to a song in their own way and that's how they interpret it. So, the way I see this song as someone who feels as if they are being held down because of where they are at either in their life or the place where they live. They just want to get out and make something of their life. Or, maybe even there's too many bad memories where they are living and they need to get away. I connect to this song in the sense I want to move to another...

I think it's about moving on to something else . the present is dull and getting on his nerves.

Society has a way of attaching to current bandwagons of ideologies and practices. If you hold a concept that doesn't conform to the majority, an internal struggle becomes exponentially external with time. I think this song represents that conflict.
