This may be wrong, but I've always taken this song to be that the narrator reflecting back on a ex. He cares deeply about the other person and is incredibly appreciative for how much they have made him a better person, but for whatever reason, the relationship had to end (my guess is that they just weren't in love anymore). I think the narrator may also sort of be wondering if ending the relationship was a mistake.
The lines "is it me, is it you is it the times that we're going through" and "there was nothing that you could've done, there was nothing that you could've said" The narrator is saying that there was no big fight that ended the relationship, but rather, the magic was gone.
"We're both still chasing shadows in out head. It was all too soon" I believe that here the narrator thinks that they both had too much going on in their personal lives at the moment, but maybe if they had met later on, things would've worked out
"I needed some one just like you, some one to let me know I could lose it all" Here the narrator is giving a sort of thanks to the other person, but I think that the 'i could lose it all' has a double meaning. Not only did the other person help him when they first met to realize that he could lose it all, but I think that the narrator is also trying to say that maybe he is losing it all by letting go of a relationship where nothing really went /wrong/ per say
