Adam and Eve Lyrics

Gather around.
Let me tell you about a place where you can dream.
A city built to save you from their altruistic ways.
Colors oh, so bright.
Tell me, tell me, could you ever leave this place?
I built this world to satisfy the desires of the people seeking change,
Yeah, the people seeking change.

You built this city in the depths to shield it from the other men
With intent to steal the dream that I have worked for.
And I won't let them in.
I've had a taste of everything,
And I brought the world down to its knees.
Now all I've worked for is mine.

It's been such a long time since I've brought this world to me.
Have I made a wrong turn, trapped inside this city in the sea?
Yeah, the city in the sea.

You built this city in the depths to shield it from the other men
With intent to steal the dream that I have worked for,
And I won't let them in.
I've had a taste of everything,
And I brought the world down to its knees.
Now all I've worked for is mine.

With one breath of air, taste will linger on your tongue, so breathe deeply.

And I won't let them in.

You built this city in the depths to shield it from the other men
With intent to steal the dream that I have worked for,
And I won't let them in.
I've had a taste of everything,
And I brought the world down to its knees.
Now all I've worked for is mine.

Cover art for Adam and Eve lyrics by Paper Melody, The

In my (somewhat biased) opinion, this song is about the 2K Games franchise 'Bioshock', from the point of view of entrepreneur and founder of 'Rapture', Andrew Ryan. Dan (Vallier) seems to be a fan of the franchise, and I believe even quoted BioShock 2 in one of his interviews.

Also (of course), there are various suggestions throughout the song that suggest a correlation: "...city in the depths"

  • The game takes place in a fictional city called 'Rapture', an underwater city in an alternate history 1950s/1960s "...built to save you from their altruistic ways"
  • Rapture is a decadent laissez-faire utopia, with a general emphasis on capitalism and wealth "It's been such a long time since I've brought this world to me. Have I made a wrong turn, trapped inside this city in the sea?"
  • The original BioShock is set a number of years after the establishment and eventual fall of Rapture, which, once a paradise and sanctuary, had at that stage become an inescapable, labyrinthine dystopia plagued by ravenous, genetically-modified 'Splicers' - Ryan becomes unsure of his own integrity and original intentions "You built this city in the depths to shield it from the other men, with intent to steal the dream that I have worked for, and I won't let them in."
  • Fontaine and his kind?

Obviously, this bears various morals and meanings per se, but I'll leave it at that, there's not much to be said. Might be hit-and-miss, or I could be entirely incorrect, but apparently I can say it's "just my personal interpretation" and get off unscathed, so... This is just how I see it. Cool band.

Song Meaning

Damn it, forgot to mention the finisher.

'ADAM' and 'EVE' are the two 'wonder-chemicals' involved in implementation and utilisation of the unique genetic alterations that become available in Rapture, and eventually become the catalyst and cause of the city's total corruption and end.

Triple post, whatever.

Personally spoken to Jill (bassist/vocalist), she confirmed, stating also that "new video will be bio shock influenced!"
