Home Lyrics

I ran away in floods of shame
I'll never tell how close I came
As I cross the Holland road
You went left and I went right
As the moon hung proud and white
You would of loved it here tonight

Spin me round just to pin me down
On the cover of this strange bed
Spin me round just to pin me dowm

Roll out your questions keep them down
Let the water lead us home
And I was sorry for what I'd done

You were young I was not old
But our story was not told
But torn apart by greedy hands

Spin me round just to pin me down
On the cover of this strange bed
spin me round just to pin me down

Spin me round just to pin me down
I'll be gone by the nights end
Spin me round just to pin me down

But I'll be home in a little while
Lover I'll be home
And I'll be home in a little while
Lover I'll be home

And I'll be home in a little while
Lover I'll be home
And I'll be homw in a little while
Lover I'll be home

To be honest, whenever I hear this song I think it's about suicide too. Prepare yourselves, this comment turned out longer than I intended. Haha.

"I ran away in floods of shame I'll never tell how close I came As I cross the Holland road You went left and I went right As the moon hung proud and white You would of loved it here tonight"

Here he seems to be talking about something bad he's done - something he regrets. Someone upthread mentioned that he'd cheated on his girlfriend? I don't know much about the band members, so that's entirely possible, so we'll use that for the sake of argument. He's mentioning something that he'd done that he's ashamed of and it seems like he's already contemplating doing something (I'll never tell how close I came), perhaps coming close to suicide again? He's miserable at the fact that he did what he did and now they've parted ways because of it. He continuously thinks about this other person too.

The chorus is: "Spin me round just to pin me down On the cover of this strange bed Spin me round just to pin me down"

And to me, this is talking about a casket, or a bed of earth. It's a bed of sorts (you rest permanently in a casket, atop a cushion and pillow, and you rest in a bed of earth) so it's a bed, but in all respects, it's a strange one, and it's a bed you are essentially pinned down onto because you can't leave it.

But if you don't want to think of it being a casket, you could essentially view it as him lying on a bed that is empty. Perhaps still thinking of his lover that he's no longer beside, or that he's no longer sleeping in the bed they shared. He feels weighed down and pinned down by what all has happened and now he's trapped, alone, on a bed he doesn't feel is his (presumably because she isn't there).

The next verses are trickier.

"Roll out your questions keep them down Let the water lead us home And I was sorry for what I'd done"

This could very easily be taken as suicide. You have people asking "Why did he do it?" And he's saying just don't ask those sorts of questions. Instead, just let the water take us home. Water has often been a metaphor for traveling to the afterlife - River Styx, anyone? You had to travel it to get to the afterlife. But even so, he's still sorry for what he did, but can't take it back.

"You were young I was not old But our story was not told But torn apart by greedy hands"

Another one that could easily be linked to suicide. "You were young, I was not old", basically saying "hey, you were young but so was I and honestly, it really wasn't my time to die. I wasn't old like I should have been when I died." But it happened, regardless, and the former lovers' story was never told because it was "torn apart by greedy hands", hands that I can only assume are his own hands, as they were the ones that took his own life. And he admittedly calls himself greedy (or even selfish) for doing such a thing.

"Spin me round just to pin me down I'll be gone by the nights end Spin me round just to pin me down"

I'll be gone by the night's end could mean a couple things. Either directly referring to death, in that he means he'll be dead by the morning. Or he could also mean his memory, say that once he's buried and gone and lying in his permanent, strange bed, his memory will fade soon enough and the woman he wronged will finally be free from what he did.

So yeah, lots of ways to interpret this song, but this is how I personally took it. :)

Everything you said, you put it so right. Everything you said is what I was thinking. I just love the emotion in this song.

I think home means her, she is his home (But call me home and i will build a throne - lover of the light) and i don't think it's about cheating or suicide ..

Man, you guys are taking this in a very depressing light. I don't see this as someone cheating or committing suicide as much as two people just separating after being together for a long time, not because they don't love each other, but because the man is a singer, and singers travel.

I always felt like his shame was simply leaving her behind, and how close he came referred to how close to came to quitting the band to go back to her. As he travels the world, he thinks of all the places that he would have liked to take her but can't because of work.

I always thought 'spin me 'round just to pin me down' was him thinking about her, and how it would go from happy and cheerful thoughts to intense feelings of missing her. The bed would be strange because it's foreign, a random bed in a random hotel.

I figured maybe he had decided to leave with the band without telling her, which is why he felt ashamed.

Their love was torn apart by his greedy hands, because he lusted for money and chose that over her.

Even with all of that said and done, he'll still be coming back home in a little while, where she's been waiting for him.

That was just my thought though.

Can't believe this has no comments. Hypem has a good version of this track (live): http://hypem.com/item/1cp69/Mumford+%26+Sons+-+Home/Untitled+(Live+on+KBCO)

I just saw this song on hype also! I am so surprised that it does not have more comments also..

I'm fairly certain that this song is about suicide. It shows in lines like

"Spin me round just to pin me down, I'll be gone by the nights end" and "I ran away in floods of shame, I'll never tell how close I came"

and the home that he is thinking of, is heaven. Perhaps he's joining someone he once loved who died, and perhaps they also committed suicide. Either way, this song reverberates it me so much. It's fantastic.

To be honest I dont think it was suicide, I think its lovers with one whom be almost cheatin! Almost came close to being with that other. Thats why the night ends without him in bed. Being spun around to be pinned in a strange bed? Thats why he'll be home in a little while. Why they were torn apart by greedy hands. Yes Im afraid darlin, this song is bout an almost but guilty cheating person.

Groovy none the less. <3

Have to agree with OpinionatedPersuasion. Why else upon their departure would the moon hang proud and white (pure)? Water can also refer to cleansing as in washing the shame of knowing how close he came to infidelity, and spin me around just to pin me down could mean although they parted ways, this other person never left his heart. Instead, he was pinned down to that moment and the feelings involved and although he returns home having made the noble decision, it wasn't what was in his heart for he wanted an end to a story that ended before it...

Why I was rated down and cannot at least neutralize the rating is strange... Each person hears what they want to hear, thus contributing small snipits of their own experience into translation, to really feel the story, the life of the one experiencing the song and is why music is a therapeutic relationship between the listener and the artist, meant to be personal and private.

I can't help but think this is about his relationship with Laura. We all know he cheated on her, and maybe he wrote it after one of the first times, or maybe just before it happened. I don't know, it's a lovely song though

I interpret this song about him almost giving into lust and cheating on his love.

My Interpretation
Cover art for Home lyrics by Mumford & Sons

You can interpret just about any song any way, and for me and my fiance we went through a time in our relationship where we had to separate for a little while to figure out our own paths, but once we got back together it was like we were home...we r going to slow dance for our wedding to this song, then at the end we r going to bust out into song and dance singing Edward Sharpe and the magnetic zeroes "Home".

My Opinion

Thats awesome. Good luck to you both.

I feel like this song is about a couple, young love, who wanted different things in life, so they went their separate ways, and all he could think about was the "what if's", he later realizes that maybe he made a mistake, than the classic story of when you love something, set it free, if it was meant to be, it will come back. Hence the "I'll be home", he's making his journey back to where his heart belongs.
