This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

Personally, I don't think this song is about sex. The way I see it, it's about a boy (the singer) invited a girl to come somewhere with him and he is really happy that she decided to come because he got to know her better / that one day made him start falling for her. He or she might have to leave in the morning so their time is running short and he just wants to make the best of this night while they still have it before time forces them to separate, because it might be a long time before they see each other again.
