Poor Millionaire Lyrics

You stand up pridefully in front of thousands screaming words of justice and truth.
You wear a mask of this cities hero. You are the pretender.
You fake, you fake, but fortunate. You wear a mask of this cities hero.
You fake, you fake, but fortunate. You are the pretender.

Your weak speech lines your gums with gold teeth, yet you don’t believe in a word that you say.
You’re speaking shackles to life. Self-rightheousness is your demise.

You coward. Draw a line in the sand. You bastard. Look at what you have become.
Your breath it reeks of perversion.
Your tongue is just like a whore, full of vulgarity, full of the disease.

Where is the life in the life you live? You are the poor millionaire.
Where is the life in the life you live? A lifeless empire, a lifeless heir.

Your crown is like a lion’s mouth devouring you from the inside out.
Turn away before there’s nothing left. It’s life or death.

Tyrant. Ring the bells of repentance, awakening from your deathbed.
Tyrant. Ring the bells of repentance, awaken from your deathbed. Oh tyrant. Oh tyrant.

You stand up pridefully in front of thousands screaming words of justice and truth.
You wear a mask of this cities hero. You are the pretender.

Coward. Coward. Where is the life in the life you live?
Where is the life in the life you live? ...life you live?

Song commentary by guitarist JB Brubaker:

"While pushing the boundaries of ABR was important when writing Leveler, it was equally important for us to not abandon what we as a band and what the fans think of as the ’core ABR sound’ and that’s why songs like ’Poor Millionaire’ are just as important to the album as more experimental tracks like ’Internal Cannon’".

I read an interview they posted last week and Jake said this song is about people in the church who make tons of money off other people's beliefs. So they are poor in spirit and a millionaire in wealth.

yes and also "christians" who live a fake christian life. And i say fake because to become a christian is a big commitment. He aims this songs to all those who don't live a christian life and say they are christian. And he doesn't appreciate how there are people that say they are and preach like they know everything, but they do those things they say they don't want other people to do. Jake said on youtube that he also uses this song as a reminder and aims this song to everyone that say they are christian as their reminder...

I agree with goodwin. Just pretty much ppl putting up a facade to fool others so they can benefit themselves. Best track on leveler IMO.

If its about a church what does this line mean? (I believe that it is because it makes complete sense, but i am just curious.)

I always thought that it was talking about a rapper or a famous musician, because of this line. "Your weak speech lines your gums with gold teeth."

My Opinion

Gold teeth gives the appearance of wealth. They say the things they say, to grow beliefs in people. They think they are so perfect and righteous, and thats what will kill them. Cowards, hiding behind rules and religion saying whatever makes people believe. Not sure if thats what it means, but it makes sense...

"There's another song that deals with Christians that are two-faced and use Christ not as a relationship but as a religion. They kind of put him on the back burner spiritually and put him in the forefront in the world so that it looks like this person loves Christ and God. Instead, he uses Christ to gain financial benefit and to be popular in the world's eyes. That song is called "Poor Millionaire." The background behind that title is that the man is a millionaire who has fame and money but is poor in the spirit and doesn't actually have a relationship with God. The guy is lost and doesn't even feel his own soul. There's some pretty brutal lines in that track, but that's what was on my heart, so I wrote it."

Song Meaning

Gotta luv musicians:) God said to worship in community, not simply worship. It's not simply a personal relationship with God, it's supposed to be a religious connection to both God and our fellow man, breaking bread TOGETHER in service to God. And I'm sure you've heard the scripture about it being our duty to spread the word. Man has free will an is flawed. Do you really think God is happier with atheists, secular humanists, and Christians who stay home and do not partake of community than he is with the flawed flock who at leasts attempt to worship him;...
