John Taylor's Month Away Lyrics
I love to look
Out at the sea
From the swing park here
At Roomebay beach
Today John Taylor
Starts his month away
On a boat, one 10 miles east
Of Aberdeen
A dozen men, thirty days
With 24 hours in each
Of shattered boyhood dreams
And not much sleep
I'd much rather be me.
For once I'd much rather be me.
A month at sea
And then they'll surely sleep
With their heads
Still stuck on land
A month on land
And they'll surely dream
Of girls they can afford
But cannot have
And in a drunken haze
They're on the rolling wave
Once again I'd much rather be me
I'd rather be me
Once again I'd much rather be me
For once again I'd much rather be me
Out at the sea
From the swing park here
At Roomebay beach
Starts his month away
On a boat, one 10 miles east
Of Aberdeen
With 24 hours in each
Of shattered boyhood dreams
And not much sleep
For once I'd much rather be me.
And then they'll surely sleep
With their heads
Still stuck on land
And they'll surely dream
Of girls they can afford
But cannot have
They're on the rolling wave
Once again I'd much rather be me
I'd rather be me

Surely John Taylor is an oil rigger or at least one of the many blokes that work on the safety boats that patrol the Oil Rigs. A pretty rotten job - the whole month spent on rocky waters.
No comments? Wow. What an amazing song. Beautiful both in lyrics, voice and composition.
Quite a confusing song, I think he is reminiscing about the beauty of fishing life, but how in reality is was very tough for people. Especially people who through family careers, fishing was the only option.
'Of shattered boyhood dreams'
He is thankful that he doesn't have to do it. Life is not amazing for him, but at least he isn't on the choppy seas.
I think life has got shitty for so many that maybe they would rather be fishing again.
What a mess the UK is in...
Haunting and beautiful. In a nutshell you wouldn't get me doing that job but put so much better. Love this song!
