Shot in the Dark Lyrics
I've been left out alone like a damn criminal
I've been praying for help 'cause I can't take it all
I'm not done
It's not over
Now I'm fighting this war since the day of the fall
And I'm desperately holding on to it all
But I'm lost
I'm so damn lost
Oh I wish it was over
And I wish you were here
Still I'm hoping that somehow
'Cause your soul is on fire
A shot in the dark
What did they aim for when they missed your heart?
I breathe underwater
It's all in my hands
What can I do?
Don't let it fall apart
A shot in the dark
In the blink of an eye, I can see through your eyes
As I'm lying awake, I'm still hearing the cries
And it hurts
Hurts me so bad
And I'm wondering why I still fight in this life
Cause I've lost all my faith in this damn bitter strife
And it's sad
It's so damn sad
Oh I wish it was over
And I wish you were here
Still I'm hoping that somehow
'Cause your soul is on fire
A shot in the dark
What did they aim for when they missed your heart?
I breathe underwater
It's all in my hands
What can I do?
Don't let it fall apart
A shot in the dark
A shot in the dark [4x]
I feel you, I'm fading away [4x]
'Cause your soul is on fire
A shot in the dark
What did they aim for when they missed your heart?

Personally, I see it as some type of struggle, where the narrator is framed and subsequently placed in the middle of a war, all while missing someone close to him or her. For a full lyrics interpretation:
I've been left out alone like a damn criminal
Going back to the framing, they're basically left abandoned while the "antagonist" of the song does what the narrator's accused of doing.
I've been praying for help cause I can't take it all
The struggle is too much for them, so they've been looking for help in every way possible.
I'm not done, It's not over. Now I'm fighting this war since the day of the fall
Because of the framing.
And I'm desperately holding on to it all But I'm lost I'm so damn lost
They're trying to make it through, but the agony is crippling.
Oh I wish it was over, And I wish you were here Still I'm hoping that somehow
Someone close to them was taken, presumably by the antagonist, and they're still optimistic, albeit hardly, about their return.
Cause your soul is on fire A shot in the dark What did they aim for when they missed your heart?
Not too sure about these lines, but I'm assuming when force failed, the antagonist used "harsher" tactics, such as poison via wording, which has corrupted the friend to the point of abandoning the narrator, who still thinks there's hope.
I breathe underwater It's all in my hands What can I do Don't let it fall apart
They're basically trapped in the position and unable to affect the outside world, even though the public perceives the narrator to affect the outside world in the wrong way.
A shot in the dark A shot in the dark
They're beginning to "chant" it, in hopes that it'll come true.
In the blink of an eye I can see through your eyes As I'm lying awake I'm still hearing the cries And it hurts Hurts me so bad
Nightmares haunt them of the apparent struggle the narrator's friend had to suffer while trying to either escape or resist.
And I'm wondering why I still fight in this life Cause I've lost all my faith in this damn bitter strife And it's sad It's so damn sad
The narrator sees no point in life anymore because the war has taken pretty much everything valuable from them.
...
I feel you fading away I feel you fading away I feel you fading away I feel you fading away
The memories are starting to fade due to the crippling agony that's occurred throughout the song, and now they're starting to reluctantly believe it.
I love this song, for sure. It's so dark and edgy and actually uses the word "damn" in an appropriate context. Okay,so time for me to unleash the winds of thought upon this bad baby. Heh. Right.
This song seems, to me, to be a definite portrayal of someone who is close to losing the spiritual war we all must fight (or at least someone who's fed up with it). This person has taken part in "the fall," and is therefore condemned ("damned") to Sheol (or Hell ^,^). So the narrator of this story is stuck in a rut. He/she is standing in this darkness, with enemies on every side, but can't see a damned thing (pun intended). That persons calls on God ("I wish you were here"), and presumably God answers in a BIG way ("shot in the dark"). The association with fire blazing through the darkness also suggests a way out. However, I'm not sure if this song is really about salvation. The undertones are very dark and depressing, and it seems that the person feels as if God has "faded away." Another example: "I've lost all my faith in this damned bitter strife." So it stands to question whether or not this song is ultimately about salvation from God when we are at our lowest point, when we've all but given up hope, or whether it's about that giving up of hope for rescue. To me, it's the former, but you could definitely argue for the latter interpretation. Probably.
@ShadowsRainDown This song can't be talking to God because so many things make no sense by that interpretation. I wish I knew what interpretation would makes sense, but just consider what these lines mean if "you" is God:

"In the blink of an eye, I can see through your eyes."
"In the blink of an eye, I can see through your eyes."
What can it mean that this person is seeing through God's eyes, and who is missing God's heart? Is someone shooting at God, or is this metaphorical shooting?

There are also things that this...
There are also things that this interpretation simply fails to explain. Strangest of all is "I breathe underwater." I really don't want to take that literally because it is too bizarre, but what sort of metaphor could it be?
If this song means anything then the meaning should explain every line.
First Comment! My favorite song in the album. I think it's based on something from the comics
I see this as yet another relationship song. It's a good pop rock track, but I don't see it as anything more than someone fighting the inner strife of being dumped (or possibly cheated on) and believing the ex partner isn't hurting too.
